We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity.  According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :

“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.

“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.

“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.

“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”

Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

Guest said- Kevin’s (aka “well I guess Glenn screwed another new guy”)

Still repeating the same lies. If you type it enough, does it come true? You’re the same liar you were a month ago.

And since you like misleading stats so much, try this: Did you know that every person that once was a Matco distributor, but isn’t now, has separated from Matco? That’s 100% churning !!! You’ve posted many diferent failure rates, so now you can use this one! That should get your WMD posting.

Guest wrote – “Aren’t these complaints from your former area?”

Junior – No actually. An keep in mind I left Matco as a DM 3 years ago.

Guest wrote – “What’s your take?”

Junior – On what? Complaints from my former area? I was the DM in New Mexico. The only post I see here from that District was a DBR that’s seperated and just invited us over for dinner.

Guest wrote – “Are these all just lazy whiners who happen to have the same complaints about the same individuals?”

Junior – I can’t say because I don’t know the facts behind all of their complaints, just Tommys.

Guest wrote – “If so, why do you think Matco is so bad at screening out lazy slackers before selling them franchises?”

Junior – Here’s what happens when a candidate comes to Matco. They dress nice, they present themselves as professionally as poss, and they are never willing to admit they are lazy, lame, stupid anything. The canidate usually sells Matco a bill a goods that they will be the best DBR Matco has ever seen. I know, I’ve done plenty of interviews. It’s months later Matco learns they were lied too.

Matco then spends thousands on trying to help these folks succeed but there just isn’t any use. They fail and next thing ya know their posting false claims on forums and craigslist. It’s no secret BTW this is a high turnover business. The math doesn’t lie and it wasn’t hidden prior to signing your docs.

Guest wrote – “You’d think after selling thousands they’d be able to do a better job, wouldn’t you?”

Junior – They actually are doing a better. This is a very challenging time in America right now and Matco is no exception. Are they perfect? No sir. Are they better, you bet your seperation agreement they are.

Lastly; I’m good with objective questions, these are fine. But anyone that knows me knows I’ll answer honestly. But understand that even though I am not with Matco today I do believe they are a wonderful company with great people working with them and for them. Maybe a bad egg here and there, but those usually get found out and are moved along.

Thanks to those that responed to my question. Would you then say the customers were shell shocked by all the new tool guys?

I would sugest to anyone still in a facing the same thing, hang in there….. If a customer asked “how are you doing” I would ALWAYS say busy. I had them reply ” The other tool guys say its slow” I would then say “I can’t keep up.” If they know your going to be there they will loosen up. We do the same thing over and over each day. If your not getting the responce you want change it quickly and find something that works. I once had a boss that showed me the ropes of sales and he said let them think you are who they want you to be.

The point is after a short time it was more true than ever. I can’t hardley keep up.
People want to be around the winning team. I have had customers say he’s no match for you when refering to competetors. The customer is always testing you make sure you don’t fail the test.

This is not a shot just hope it will help someone from going out of business unles thats what they want.

There is no short cut just keep pluging away.

Okay all you failures that think Matco is to blame for all lifes problems. Let me tell you a story a story that will sound simular to your own life. You had a job mabey you liked it mabey not you wanted more you wanted to be in business you wanted your piece of the american dream. Somehow you heard of Matco and you jumped in with both feet trusting a DM you put all your trust into 1 person. It didn’t work out or you are now failing so since you put all your eggs in one basket trusted but 1 person this must be the DM and Matco’s wrong doing ?

The reason you can’t pay your bills your going bankrupt your wife left you and the dog died ( sounds like an old country song) is all because Matco miss led you ? Wrong that’s right wrong answer you missled yourself. How many of you made a business plan researched the route looked at economic numbers short term and long term for your territory (all of this information and I mean all and a lot more is located at your local SBA office).

The SBA also offers a free business plan review the group is called SCORE (look them up on the internet) these people are retired business men women that give free advice and their opinion has no bias. Examples of business plans are all over the internet and any book store has many samples. So before you continue to blame and whine go look in the mirror and you will see who let you down yourself.

  • richard

i remember being told in 2008 that there wasnt anything wrong with the economy that i just needed to work harder..
that was the same year that they cancelled the christrmas festivities at stow. i wonder what caused that. duh

Perhaps Kevin or the other MDAC reps can bring everyone up to speed about how Matco is addressing this problem, and how MDAC is pressing important issues like this.

Does anyone know which urgent issues MDAC is currently tackling? Replacing lost or diminished shops? Churning? Or more critical issues like chewing tobacco and dogs on trucks?

i totally disagree with what you say about when a person goes to matco. i was one that went there and i dressed appropriately but not to deceive anyone. i was given the royal carpet treatment and told that i would have all the help that i needed, not. i think that you need to rethink your thoughts. im sure im not the only one that thinks that too.
matco courted me big time. when the person came to my house they said that i had alot of nice things that could be sold if i needed extra money. i did not pay any attention to that thought till i saw all that is on here and i understand why now.
you must be another one of those that lives in a sheltered world.

    We are in trouble….
The population of this country is
    300 milliion.
160 million are retired. That leaves
140 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school.
Which leaves 55 million to do the work.
Of this there are 35 million employed by the fedral govt.
Leaving 20 million to do the work.
2.8 million in the armed forces preoccupied killing terrorists !!
Which leaves 17.2 million to do the work.
Take from that the 15.8 million who wok fo the state and city govt.
That leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time 188,000 are in hospitals.
Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to sell all the TOOLS.
    You and Me.
And there you are crying like a little school girl how hard life is sitting on your A$$
    Nice real nice.
Don’t worry I can handel it

you need to get a new spell checker, yours sucks. just saying. someone as professional as you should at least be able to spell better, especially with an automatic spell checker.

Tommy Cheung, TAKE THE HINT!! The NY Post and The Wall Street Journal also deposit your propaganda straight to the round file.. But I’m sure you’ll still be singing that old country song..

Guest- Bringing you up to speed is something far beyond anyone’s abilities. I have explained how MDAC works, and how topics are brought to Matco. Since you have no connection with Matco, you wouldn’t understand. Scroll up the page and find your answers, if that’s within your scope.

  • TLMAN

Why do people set goals ??? so we don’t need to blame others for our short falls. EVERY ONE LOOK UP ” THE ART OF SELLING BY ALEC BALDWIN” ON YOU TUBE do it now the winners will smile and sell a lot of tools next week the failures will hang their head in shame.

Found this on Craigslist in Tommy’s home town ( I’m sorry, I can’t say who posted it)

    CRAIGSLIST AD
WANTED; leadership, direction, and a life’s education for Tommy Cheung

Jacksonville FL resident Tommy Cheung is looking for an employer that can give him a structured education on how to work for a living. He needs constant attention and someone that can keep him busy. He will need someone to double check his work for quality and quantity. Don’t assume he isn’t thinking about a better way to build an airplane or erect a sky-scrapper because he is. So stay on him at all times, he gets bored easy. If he strays from the plan or the policy watch your back because he’s reinvented your business and believes you should be working for him. You see Tommy is a special person, loved by many, so much so there’s hundreds of people that can’t wait to see him face to face some day. If you have a job for Tommy then please reply to this right away.

Matco is not a get rich scam like Guest and others hoped it would be. It is however a nice business if you work at it it is alot of fun for the right person it is not perfect. You could lose your investment but if your are half way intelligent and have a good business plan this is a great way to earn a living. I for one do not want distributors to join Matco that are weak looking for a free ride or just have hope this will not work if this is you go get a job at wallmart. Guest might be a manager at one mabey he can help

Forum posts, UFOC’s, dirrections for the use of a straw…I already knew what I was dealing Dick, just needed you to help prove another point.

    Next?

Yes, “mabey” I could work at “wallmart” or even in a “sky-scrapper” some day like my favorite motor-pool marine TLMAN!

i choose to ignore your comments from now on. both of you are so far off the point that it is rediculous .
merry christmas and happy new year to you both.

TLMAN, he’s busy running spell check on his next stupid comment. Maybe he’s running the entire statement through the Tommy Cheung committee of failures.

  • Junior

Dick wrote – “i choose to ignore your comments”

Junior – Works for me, I’m here to challenge Tommy’s rhetoric. Add balance and facts to his claims. Warn potential separated DBR’s that if they become sucked into his ‘gang’ they too will look up one day and find nearly 5 years have gone by and you have wasted your life on a campaign that doesn’t pay. No advancement, no rewards, no gains. It’s called TOMMY’S WORLD.

Junior – “I cut you slack on “Mike Raimey”. Not sure who that is.”

Guest – Feel free to Google “quotation marks” Junior. All of the misspellings you cite weren’t mine. not that it matters.

Misspellings by the Have-nots aren’t that amusing since they are not the ones acting pompous & condescending, bragging about how successful they are and all they own. It is amusing when someone arrogantly tells another to go work at “Wallmart” or at a “sky-scrapper”

It’s amusing when a pompous know-it-all references Mt. Suribachi and plagiarizes quotes from the movie “Patton,” telling how he was trained to kill, etc. and it turns out he turned wrenches in the motor pool and gets his battle experience from the History Channel.

But don’t worry. Even if you seem like buffoons you are still all rich, powerful, superior in every way, and giving enough to share your example with your inferiors.

Junior writes “I spent 10 years with Matco and know the system inside and out. It’s nearly perfect.”

    Nearly perfect?

How do you account for the fact that this “nearly perfect” system has one of the highest SBA loan defaults in all of franchising? That CNN called the Matco Franchise the “riskiest” of SBA backed loans.

How is it that a “nearly perfect” system is costing American taxpayers millions?
    http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/failure-rates-of-the-10-most-popular-franchises/

How is it that a “nearly perfect” system is being hit with lawsuits alleging fraud?
    http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/franchise-lawsuit-matco-tools-scam/

How is it that a “nearly perfect” system’s own statistics show a frighteningly high churn rate?
    http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/matco-tools-franchise-distributor-churning/

How is it that a “nearly perfect” system generates 1600+ comments (so far) regarding franchise complaints but less than 80 on a page that invites positive comments.
    http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/matco-tools-franchise-defenders-speak-out/

There are more than 3000 franchise companies. Why is it that Matco is generating more complaints on this site than the other 2999.

To claim the Matco system is “nearly perfect” seems borderline delusional. Just because it was perfect for you, Junior, doesn’t mean it’s working perfect elsewhere.

    Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Six years on MDAC, not me, but others have raised the issue several times about the National Purchase Average and how unfair it is base this on a ‘National Average’, why not regional or district?

Matco’s response EVERYTIME=”take it off the list, it is not up for discussion”.

    Is the NPA based on:
    1. Since the time in business?
    2. YTD?
    3. Weekly purchases?
    4. Monthy basis?
    5. What ever Matco deems necessary to decide?

And when should it be determined that you are not meeting the average and action should take place?

There seems to be many that have ALL the answers on this forum, please respond.

TODD, NONE OF US ARE FAILURES, JUST THE DEFENDERS,TRYING TO DEFEND MATCO AND CAR SALESMAN, THEY TRY TO SCREW YOU ALL THEY CAN.

THEY DON’T KNOW EACH AND EVERY PROBLEM WE ALL HAD, SOME CLAIM TO BE AT THE TABLE UP THE D.M’s AZZ, WHILE WE WERE SIGNING THE DOC’S AND THEY KNOW EVERYTHING, WHEN IN FACT, THEY ARE STUPID, NO ONE IN PARTICULAR, BUT YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Junior I respect! He leaves his name! Like the other guys who have complimented on him I too know him personally. He is a shining example of how the partnership should be between Matco and the Franchise Distributors.

But why is it that Matco corporate defends their management without looking into things?

In my case I asked my DM in Nov. of 2009 to resurvey my route due to low head count. He said he would. Then 2 months later sends me an email stating my purchase average for the year is around $1600 per week. NO SHIT! I just told you twice the previous year I am hurting and need a route survey. I suggested earlier in the year then got him to commit when I told him I was losing a shop with over 25 techs in it which also was 15% of my tp per week. Then I get a letter on July 12, 2010 stating my purchase average is too low and I have 90 days to cure. Did my DM ever do a survey?

It appears that the contract states that outside purchases are forbidden.

When is it appropriate to terminate someone that purchases products outside?
    1. The first offense?
    2. Second offense?
    3. After x number of warnings of the violation?
    4. When the Matco DM is not making enough money off of you?
    5. When you fall below 100% NPA?
    6. When you are the ONLY ONE buying outside?

I’m sure one of the most wise and all-knowing can give their opinion on this.
