We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity.  According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :

“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.

“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.

“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.

“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”

Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

My franchise fee is the fact I pay as much as 30% more for the same tool I can buy elsewhere….With BETTER TERMS!

Whether I have a failing LOC or not, the opportunity to sign on the dotted line is the same.

  • Kevin

Debbie said: “Each year we are asked to sell tickets to the NHRA National Event Drag Race. There is NO margin on these tickets, meaning we sell them for cost – despite the fact we give the customer 7 weeks to pay. In addition, we are expected to run a contest where We give away a pair of tickets to the race. Of course We PAY for those tickets! We make NO money on these sales and it COSTS us money to give tickets away.

It should either fall under uncompensated labor and/or advertising fees!”

DEBBIE!! If you don’t want to participate in race ticket sales, then DON’T!! Nobody is forcing you to sell them! You aren’t expected to run any contest- it’s up to YOU! Your attitude simply sucks! PLEASE find something to do that doesn’t require customer relations.

  • Former Distr

Kevin, as you stated, I did have to buy a Starter Inventory, and your right I could sell it. But according to the Contract I signed, it has to be replaced AND maintained as a minimum. SO Yes I Did have a Franchise fee that CAN NOT MAKE ME MONEY, IT given RIGHT back to MATCO!

  • MATCO#1

    OK former…some basic’s for you.
How do i calculate the average of something?
Add whatever values you have together, and then divide by the number of things that you added.

For example, say you got an 87, 82, and a 98 on your tests.

You would add 87+82+98, which equals 267

Then, divide 267 by 3, since you added 3 numbers together.
Your average for those would be 267/3= 89

But lets brake it down for you even more. Let’s say my p/a is $10,000 per week. Formers is $5,000 per week, and Tommys is $500 per week. That’s a purchase average of $5,661 per week. See Tommys very low purchase average cancels out my very high purchase average, which brings us to just about your purchase average.

So if you got 50 guys at $7,000 per week, and 50 guys at $4,000 per week and 50 guys at $1,500 per week. Guess what, thats a $4,166 purchase avg, so you saying 50 guys out weigh 1500 distributors is complete nonsense, but it is consistant with everything else you post…nonsense.

  • MATCO#1

So former, you are saying after you sold all of your starter inventory, you had to restock your truck? You mean you have to have inventory to make sales?

Then you say you couldn’t sell the tools so that became a franchise fee, wow? I try and keep my truck stocked with fast moving tools. As an example, I have sold over 50 1/2 impacts this year, guess what I keep 3 on the truck at all times. Now 1/4 impacts I have only sold 10 of those, so I keep 1, thats what you should do former, look up in your ISN database your sales history and only stock items that you sell a lot of.

  • Kevin

One would think that if there were 50 good routes, and 800 “pieces of shit” (Former) that would make for a REALLY low purchase average. But hey, what do I know.

  • Kevin

Former said: “Kevin, as you stated, I did have to buy a Starter Inventory, and your right I could sell it. But according to the Contract I signed, it has to be replaced AND maintained as a minimum. SO Yes I Did have a Franchise fee that CAN NOT MAKE ME MONEY, IT given RIGHT back to MATCO!”

So Former, what did you do, sell the tools for COST and give it all back to Matco? No wonder you failed. I sell my stuff for MORE than I pay for it, and replace the inventory. Then the rest of the money is MINE! Crazy, right?

  • MATCO#1

Guest17, sending Cary a 100 square board for superbowl, make sure he gives you a copy.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    No Kevin! Wrong Again!

That makes for a lot of CHURN and BURN!
Why do you think there are 465 routes available with Matco right now!

    CHURN AND BURN!!!

  • Former Distr

Again, Matco#1, you stop short of all the facts.
There are some facts that have to be taken into consideration. Normal turnover is 15%. So discount 15% if you’d like but then don’t consider the 15% incoming with Starter Inventory purchases.

my example used 100 Distributors, leaning toward your positive attitude of the discussion.. 100x14k=1.4M

    3000 NPA x 1100 = 3.3M

That leaves 1.9M to be made up from the other 1000 distributors AND the NEW Starts, but we’ll leave out the new starts. 1.9M / 1000 = 1900

ANY Way you look at it, Matco can always target at LEAST the bottom 30-40 percent. No matter what the average is, the bottom 30-40% are always failures. ALWAYS.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    OBC riding the HIGH LIFE!

Get on up! With your BAD SELF!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Former says.

    Get on up OBC!

    Churn those New Franchisees!

    Makes some Butter!

    EEEOOWWW! I FEEL GOOD!

  • Former Distr

Kevin, I sold mine for the list price, less a tee shirt here and there, pocket calendar, christmas screwdriver. Gave away (as a group) several harley’s, four wheelers, TV’s, Guns, race tickets, beer and food at the races and hospitality events.

Then when I decided to leave matco , I sent it all back, mostly as brokens.

Now I buy the same stuff 30% cheaper and sell it for 15% less. Now that I don’t have to “SELL” ‘Matco’, and I figured out the scam my DM put on us about participating in all the ‘give-away’s’, I actually put some money in MY pocket and still earn my customers with honesty and loyalty. My customers are smart enough to know – “nothing is for free”. They knew they paid for all that ‘Free stuff’, and if they didn’t I did.

  • MATCO#1

Former, problem is Starter inventory is not factored into P/A, as DM’s no commission on starter and it was not factored into our p/a for our district for I believe 3 months, may have been 2, not 100% sure it’s been a while.

Just because I sell 14,000 doesnt mean thats my p/a either, lots of things to consider, but I would say you are correct the bottom 25% are definately under the average…always. But lets look at this, I believe that there are about 300-400 charters left, I know of 3, two in both of my old districts and both under 80%, Kevin is a charter but well above, so the low ones, lower the p/a of charters…right, the bottom line is the p/a is accurate, the lower 25% dont want to believe it, the upper 25% dont know how they stay in business so there will always be an arguement.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Former

And the great thing is you can provide 95% of what Matco has to offer their customers to your customers without the name.

Because ladies and gentlemen! MOST of MATCO”S tools come from vendors who sale to every WAREHOUSE DISTRIBUTOR but with their name on them.

MATCO just gets companys to put special packaging on their product so people will think it came from MATCO!

  • MATCO#1

Yep Todd, MATCO, MAC, Snap On, Cornwell, ISN, ACE and who ever else out there that has a tool company. That’s why there is companies called, otc, thexton, sp, grey phenumatic, IR, fluke, gearwrench,

  • MATCO#1

Former I am sure your 50 customers appreciate your hard work.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    NOOOOOOOOOO! MATCO#1

    Glass is not half EMPTY!

Kevin, as a charter, RAISES the purchase average consuming innocent WMD and raising the GOD-like status of SUPERIOR OBC members. Innocent New Franchisees get SUCKED into EXPO paying for these lavish resort stays for the GLORIFIED OBC GODS!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    WRONG AGAIN! MATCO#1

Snap-On has CONTINUOSLY put out products from their own manufacturing companies that can not be purchased elsewhere in an order to separate themselves from other competitors.

    GONG!!!

  • Former Distr

Exactly! that is the problem I have with the system. You don’t know how I stay in business.

Lets just say I sell 2400 /wk. Just under the 80%. I service every credit worthy individual in my LOC. Remember ‘I’ get to make that call, since its MY money.

My profit is just under $1K / week. I’m retired. I buy fuel and insurance. My truck is paid for, my house is paid for. All I have is fuel and insurance, a little maintenance and utilities.

Just like the brochure, be your own boss, work your own hours, blah blah blah…

I’m retired from the corporate life and I got just what I want and Matco says no…Your outta here.

Thats my beef….It’s not about the money. I work and support my community and they do the same for me. But matco says NO! we want MORE MONEY! (Actually I think it is all the DM, but that is my opinion, Matco supported him)

So… Still no new Matco guy on the scene. The DM and Matco lost 18 months of what ever I was willing to buy. Not much, but sorry for them.

  • MATCO#1

Well former, the tool business may be a retirement for you, but I believe MATCO is in business to make money, not to support your golf game(tool business).

Hey if you desire to sell 2,400 a week, more power to you, you have done the right thing being independant.

In 3/4 of my route there is a MAC dbr, been doing it 30 years, works I don’t know maybe 2 days a week, MAC cant touch him. But you know what I bet I get 20 people a week bitching because they have brokens and no MAC guy. He is a nice guy just like you, semi retired, but man, MAC’s name is MUD in my area, and that is why MATCO, Snap On, and Cornwell have the 80% rule.

Maybe when I am your age, that might be good.

  • MATCO#1

Well today, just today at a Chevy dealer, a couple guys on the truck point to a wire stripper, how much they ask. I tell them 20 bucks. One guy laughs at the other, I just saved 40 bucks. His buddy bought a blue point from snap on guy for 60 bucks, identical.

  • MATCO#1

Todd, how come you wont sell any of that $50,000 in inventory, maybe you were lying to us about having it.

  • MATCO#1

You can’t do better than #1 … and that’s just what Matco Tools has done again. We’re consistently ranked the #1 tool franchise by trusted Entrepreneur Magazine

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Matco#1

Yeah their are crooked Snap-On guys! Just like their are crooked Matco guys!

Just like their are crooked DM’s and RM’s and management that does not do a thing about it.

But thank GOD I live in AMERICA where there are attorneys who will take action for you so you don’t have to resort to what my fore fathers did. Pick up a gun and go to WAR! Thank You Fore Fathers! Thank You GOD!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Yeah I am a LIAR!

If I were a LIAR I would still be associated with Matco probably as a DM!DM!DM!

  • Todd A. Peterson

Besides! If I were going to sell it there has been tons of offers to buy it already. You were not at BOB EVANS in STOW, OH were you?

Let’s just say! Some people who SPIT in your FACE make things PERSONAL. VERY PERSONAL.

  • Todd A. Peterson

Matco continually profits from churned distributors in order to buy a #1 Franchise rating from( TRUSTED) Entrepreneur Magazine.

    TRUSTED??? WHAT a JOKE!

  • Todd A. Peterson

ACCORDING to TODD A. PETERSON’s Personal First Hand Knowledge!

    Entrepeneur Magazine is FUllOF A&%#

  • guest17

Thanks Matco#1, we will put them to good use! And make money on the fooseball game! That is if Matco doesnt screw us over some how HAHA

  • Kevin

Todd, come back when you’re not drunk. You’re making a fool of yourself (again).

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Matco#1

So, if a Distributor only works 3 days a week and has less than $18,000 in Matco inventory. Will Matco let him sell his Franchise?

  • Cary Devitt

    MATCO#1

Thanks for the superbowl board, I’ll make sure guest17 gets a copy tommorow @ lunch.

Todd, if you have any MT1724K’s left in your $50k I would love to purchase them from you. They are on backorder. My email address is on matcotools.com/carydevitt.

Oh I get the churn thing now…..butter churn you are so clever. churn and burn!

    I prefer “Shake and Bake”

SHAKE up the nay sayers and BAKE the competition!!!!

Former no offense to you I now understand that you are a retiring “independent” @ $2400 a week. Any potential distributors watching this site holding any stock in what this “former” has to say…..run back to your job! I could collect $2400 a week with a creative cardboard sign on an interstate offramp!!!!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Hi! Kevin!

Are you trying to say I am drunk? Why sould a guy like me be drunk? What reason would I have to be DRUNK?

Oh and thanks for adding fool to the list of names you call me.

I feel sooo close to you! Can I call you BerGODman?

  • Cary Devitt

Todd, the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem

  • Cary Devitt

Todd, I would love to be your sponsor….all you have to do is ask

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Cary Devitt

I had two DM’s help me return my inventory. I have no “Returnable Inventory” left.
I can tell you what I returned minus 15%, minus what Matco sent back, minus what they paid me leaves me a balance due. Any inventory I have is either Matco “Outdated” or “Special Order”

  • Todd A. Peterson

What!! I already have a SAVIOR so I don’t need a sponser. But thanks for offering.

I think I will nickname you OBC Commander because you are wise like Obi Wan Kenobi.

AARRGH! The force is strong with this one.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    OBC Commander!

I do have a problem its called the “Cary Devitt hemroid” he keeps poping up on Unhappy Franchisee. He won’t go away!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Time for bed typo’s! popping

  • Cary Devitt

    Hey Former

when you retire is medcoisnweisstoolsmeagles going to try and find another salesman to continue to address warranty and continued service issues with your customers?????? Answer NO! Your legacy ends “you selfish individual (not sure of your parents marital status would have called you a bastard) ” when you park your truck. How do you sleep at night knowing that when you shut down all those customers that depended on your weekly visit will be sitting on a box full of your useless tools.

I know that when I am gone there will be another to pick up the “MATCO TOOLS #1 FRANCHISE” flag and continue to take care of my 325 friends.

  • Cary Devitt

    Todd,

Email us a list of what you have left! maybe we can help you turn that inventory into cash. MATCO#1 has offered at least three times and im interested too.

  • Todd A. Peterson

I am SORRY unhappy franchisee. I am getting off track on my post. Everytime I post legit question’s these guys get ugly and start calling me names and putting words in my mouth. I love having a forum where other people can be made aware of the Mr Hyde side of Matco. These guys will not go to their own forum and post because they KNOW things are not right with Matco. I have exposed Matco for who and what they are. I am a Moral and Ethical man who has volunteered as a coach for soccer, basketball and softball. I have Never been to Jail, I have never received a DWI, I volunteer for my son’s cub scout troop. I go to church, I have actively participated in my church, I went to Louisianna to help Katrina victims with my church while working for MATCO. The same year I was #41. I served my Country for 3 years in the Regular Army.

I am not bragging or being prideful! I am trying to say I am not an idiot, fool, stupid, moron, liar or accuser. I am an HONEST man who ran an HONEST franchise and had it destroyed by lying, dishonest and fraudulent EMPLOYEE’S working for dishonest and NON-Supportive Management System.

Go Ahead Matco. I stated it try and use it against me in court. PLEASE!

    Call me a LIAR!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    OBC Commander calm down!

Throwing out the term BASTARD now!

    You are the MAN!

I hope you feel the same way when Matco churns another Franchise Distributor. I hope you call your DM, RM and Matco Corporate and raise hell and call them Bastard’s for leaving another route without service.

I tried putting Preparation H on your name but it is still there!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    OBC Commander

I tried emailing but the file is TOOO BIG.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    NOT!!!

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Will someone answer a Question?

So, if a Distributor only works 3 days a week and has less than $18,000 in Matco inventory. Will Matco let him sell his Franchise?

  • Tommy Cheung

The defenders are on here, because they worry that the lawsuits that are filed and more are coming, that it is going to change the way matco does business, you are right, change is coming.

Could they be ousting the current distributors, only to put in corporate trucks, i bet you guys are really concerned about your future, you all are on here trying to save face.

Are you concerned that you may be the next ones kicked to the curb by Matco? Its coming, so when it does , we will be here for you, its going to be a wild ride.

LETS SAY IT TOGETHER NOW, THE TOOL BUSINESS IS CHANGING AND YOUR TIME IS LIMITED.

Matco already has control over you, they have their foot in colleges, big corporate accounts like carmax, they have special deals for the new tech that you can’t even touch, they stab you in the back , like your fellow distributor does, and theres nothing you are going to do. They tell you when to upload mdbs, they know your every move.

The tally on the defenders side is very low, why is that, is there no one defending matco, have they pissed everybody off, no one is visiting that site, because trying to defend matco, you would have to lie, thats right you should, because your D.M and R.M. teach you that.

Defenders, you are trying like hell to disrupt this conversation, save matco, save your future, its not going to work, because the odds are against you and so is matco. The tool business will be corporate before long, hopefully when it does happen, Matco will abide by the law.

Matco is not loyal to their distributors, you are just a number who can and will be replaced by another number. There is a guy here in Ft Walton beach, was a distributor for 24 years, had a heart attack, then had to have back surgery, was out for about seven weeks, no loyality from matco, kick him to the curb. Dedicated tool man and they did him like this, WOW, WTF MATCO. THE MATCO WAY. I know,it wasn’t matco, it was the district manager, I know defenders, matco would not do their distributors this way, yea right.

  • Tommy Cheung

THIS IS ANOTHER SAYING FOR WHAT MDAC STANDS FOR:

    M- MATCO

    D- DISTRIBUTORS

    A- AGAINST

    C- CORPORATE

ANOTHER REASON NOT TO BUY A MATCO FRANCHISE, GO SNAP-ON

  • Tommy Cheung

When we were distributors, just think, we had these defenders supposedly watching our backs as brothers and sisters are supposed to do. They would stab you in the back in a heartbeat, these defenders had no ones back , but their own.

Typical matco distributors, who don’t give a damn about their fellow distributors, only watching out for themselves. You could really count on these defenders, when needed, yea right.

MATCO WAY, COME LEARN, GET DRUNK AND PARTY AT EXPO WITH YOUR FELLOW DISTRIBUTORS AND LEARN HOW TO STAB YOUR FELLOW DISTRIBUTOR IN THE BACK, THE D.M.’s and R.M.’s TEACH THESE CLASSES EVERY DAY, VERY INFORMATIVE.
