We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity.  According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :

“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.

“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.

“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.

“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”

Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

Yea defenders are always trying to sugar coat and bake the truth, beacuse it hurts so much to know you will be losing your franchise to corporate trucks, even though you are currently employed by matco, they may keep you in one of their trucks or maybe not.

CHANGE IS COMING, CORPORATE TRUCKS EVERYWHERE

    KEEP POSTING ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE.

  • Tommy Cheung

    Guys and gals,

LETS IGNORE THOSE WHO ARE TRYING TO SAVE FACE AND KEEP THEIR FRANCHISE, THE ODDS ARE AGAINST THEM AND THEIR DAYS ARE NUMBERED.

    Cary Dipshit,

your comments on ‘Cary Devitt on December 29th, 2011 2:24 am’

Are nothing but a personal attack. You apparently know nothing of the tool business. Maybe your a DM. Don’t know, don’t care. I provide facts how I can earn a living that I’m happy with and you make personal attacks, your jealous that I only have to work for play money?

The products I sell are the same thing Matco Sells, just has the original manufacturers name on the product, which means it can be warrantied through several locations, in fact the area I live has more successful independent distributors than there are franchises.

Please if you really want to provide worthy content, please tell the forum here WHAT MATCO MANUFACTURES. Outside of tool boxes, made with foreign materials, feel free to list them, I’ll listen.

In fact, it’s amazing how hypocritical you guys are, I was in a MDAC meeting with Kevin when, they all admitted they buy outside. I don’t care if your over or under 80%NPA, your violating the franchise agreement, except charters….

Because of what Matco has done to me, Matco’s name is MUD around here. It is a shame and I don’t condone it but I have several customers that were willing to default on their PSA’s and tell Matco to “come pick it up”, because they refuse to deal with anyone else and they are not willing to deal with an immoral company like Matco.

And I’m glad you think I only sell 2400/week, I wouldn’t reveal any of my real numbers because you would be disappointed in the margins your making at Matco. My customers have a choice, Snapon, Mac, Cornwell, and several independents run this area. I have my customers and they have theirs, but I am in no danger of going away.

i’m sorry you guys can’f fight with facts.

Please guys, make up your mind. Is it MATCO that sells the tools or is it YOU.
Let me see…. When you retire, Mike Swanson and Ernie Lauber is going to run to your customers and keep the MATCO LEGACY going? You really think they care about your customers? wait… sorry Matco Customers?

You guys are really trying but its not working.

Cary…Love the Shake and Bake….yeah you would think a guy who complains about having $50,000 grand in inventory would want to get rid of it, but just like everything else….The Truth Will Set You FREE!!!! Shake and Bake….OBC!

MATCO#1 continues to sling “number two,” and thereby provides more opportunities for warnings to prospective Matco distributors

“We’re consistently ranked the #1 tool franchise by trusted Entrepreneur Magazine”

If you want to make your franchise decision based on the rankings of the “trusted” Entrepreneur magazine, why not choose from the franchises ranked HIGHER than Matco Tools:

Hampton Hotels is ranked higher than Matco Tools
ampm convenience stores is ranked higher than Matco Tools
McDonald’s is ranked higher than Matco Tools
7-Eleven Inc. is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Supercuts is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Days Inn is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Vanguard Cleaning Systems is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Servpro is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Subway is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Denny’s is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Jan-Pro Franchising Int’l. Inc. is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Hardee’s is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Pizza Hut is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Kumon Math & Reading Centers is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Dunkin’ Donuts is ranked higher than Matco Tools
KFC Corp. is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Jazzercise Inc. is ranked higher than Matco Tools
Anytime Fitness is ranked higher than Matco Tools

Entrepreneur suggests you’d be better off as a janitor with Jan-Pro or Vanguard than a Matco Tools distributor.

Entrepreneur ranks running a hair salon at Supercuts higher than driving around burning expensive fuel in a Matco Tools truck.

You could really clean up with a ServPro franchise. The “respected” Entrepreneur says its better than Matco Tools.

What about Kumon Math & Reading Centers? As Junior, Kevin, MATCO#1, Jay, Guest2, Guest3, matcoman, Guest17 prove illiteracy is rampant in our country. And respected Enterepreneur ranks it higher than a Matco franchise.

What about Jazzercize? Respected magazine Entrepreneur recommends renting a gym and teaching exercise dance routines to a boombox as a superior business opportunity than Matco Tools, if you go by rankings like MATCO#1 does.

Other advantages of these higher-ranked franchises:

    – You can’t be terminated for not buying 80% of the national average
    – Your financing options won’t be hurt by one of the highest SBA default rates in all of franchising
    – You won’t be told which customers you can sell to, and which you are forbidden to take money from
    – You will probably have a better than 7% chance of reselling your franchise if you want out
    – If you dare raise a concern or voice a complaint, you probably won’t have an Old Boys Club with the likes of Junior, Kevin, MATCO#1, Jay, Guest2, Guest3, matcoman, Guest17 descend on you like a pack of rabid dogs

    MATCO#1 says “You can’t do better than #1 …”

Actually, you can. You can go with any of the many other franchises ranked higher than Matco Tools by that “respected” advertorial rag EntreManure.

  • guest17

Oh is guest upset because his business is not in a magazine? They don’t have a ranking for thirsty leaches?? So sorry guest.. Better go back to kicking rocks.

  • Guest

“They don’t have a ranking for thirsty leaches?? So sorry guest.. Better go back to kicking rocks.”

Thirsty “leaches” kick rocks? Another incomprehensible come-back from the Old Boys Club.

That zinger would probably hurt if I knew what it meant (other than guest17 is off his meds again).

  • MATCO#1

So Tommy can’t wait for the next batch of people you bring in Debbie has to re-gift to post and u think OBC may be getting board.
    Let’s review shall we:
Debbie, works 4 days, 40 hr work weeks, doesn’t attend sales meetings or expo, and doesn’t promote tools only her cause
Todd, didn’t read his contract that said he had a list of calls to follow and took it upon himself to covet 1/2 of Arkansas. Even at that didn’t have the customer count most people have in one route, claimed to have 50,000 grand in tools but when push came to shove, couldn’t back it up.
Former who admits he is retired sells 2400 a week and can’t understand why nobody wants him?
Tommy we all know your story, now I an sure these are all nice people but… We can all see why they are ex-Matco.
It’s funny Tommy I thought this sight was jerry’s idea, but now I think it might be Matco idea….Tommy shake and bake!!!!

  • Tommy Cheung

OBC club , slandering again, they are really concerned about losing their franchise, they want to dilut the conversation here.

The defenders site is gone, why, because no one cares about Matco. Their must not have been any supporters.

    M- MATCO

    D- DISTRIBUTORS

    A- AGAINST

    C- CORPORATE

more and more people are against matco.

  • Former Distr

you OBC guys never address the questions to you.

What does matco manufacture? What is that sells your tools? Matco or you?
Who’s going to carry your legacy on? matco over the internet probably. Thats how I do my matco warranty :)

  • Guest

So more on the tutorial by MATCO#1 on what to consider before signing up as a Matco Tools distributor.

MATCO#1 writes “You can’t do better than #1 … and that’s just what Matco Tools has done again. We’re consistently ranked the #1 tool franchise by trusted Entrepreneur Magazine.”

In my last comment, I just showed that MATCO#1 is wrong about not doing better than #1, as there are 18 franchises Entrepreneur ranks higher than Matco.

As to the “#1” ranking Matco blasts everywhere as its main selling point, it’s #1 of only 2 tool franchises who submitted info for the ranking. Even of those two, some years Matco is ranked #1 and some years Snap-On is ranked #1. Big deal.

The Entrepreneur ranking is not only meaningless, its silly, embarrassing even, that a big company like this wouldn’t have a better claim to fame than a ranking that guarantees a top 2 position just for showing up!

MATCO#1 and Matco’s cries of “we’re #1” reek of desperation and a lack of a real, non-deceptive & valid selling point.

Sure, there are other mobile tools franchises you can choose from: Snap-on, Cornwell, Mac Tools. But aren’t they all structured pretty much the same?

Don’t all their franchisees have the same complaints?
Can’t their franchisees all be terminated for not maintaining minimum tool purchases?
Can’t Snap-on, Cornwell, Mac Tools franchisors terminate their franchisees and resell to someone new and rake in a new initial tool purchase, new finance charges, new truck lease?

So if you read the comments by MATCO#1 and the others trying to cover up HUGE problems with smoke, mirrors and laughable franchise rankings, you’ll realize that the REAL question is not:
“Which is the best tool franchise?” but
“Why buy a mobile tool franchise at all?”

  • Tommy Cheung

you will never know who created this site and who’s running it, possibly me, makes you wonder.

Geez, defenders, we need to find out about this site, its bothering me to not know , who’s running this page.

Obc club, matco wants to know who’s running this site, can you please find out?
OBC club, have you found emplyment yet?

Just think guys and gals, we had these people supposedly watching our backs, a bunch of back stabbers.

  • MATCO#1

Guest 17, you forgot one important piece, guest would have to have a business for it to be in a magazine…guest son had a business but failed, guest bailed him out though….that’s what fathers are for.

  • MATCO#1

Tommy company called “idea farm”, but appears to be recruitment for marks and Klein, I don’t really care, I know one thing there is no way in the world it’s you…

  • MATCO#1

Guest where were you a Matco distributor?

  • MATCO#1

Guest, the answer to your gibberish regarding hampton hotels and mcdonalds u am guessing comes down to money. Most people that come into business with Matco don’t have a million in the bank to drop on a mcdonalds. This just further proves you have no idea about anything regarding owning a business….heck why not just buy a major league baseball team what are these guys thinking just settling for a tool franchise.

  • MATCO#1

Tommy nobody was watching your back, according to junior everybody was laughing behind you back…nope take that back, junior said at you, not behind your back

  • Todd A. Peterson

Hello! Will someone with a brain answer a Question?

So, if a Distributor only works 3 days a week and has less than $18,000 in Matco inventory. Will Matco let him sell his Franchise?

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Hey Former!

I wonder if adding all these Churned Destributors propells Matco into that #1 Ranking. That would be believable. Maybe we can send them a letter asking how they derive the conclusion of who is and is not #1. You know WHAT FACTORS they judge on!

  • Former Distr

Guest your absolutely right on all counts.

The real problem is ‘Franchising’. I know of several situations with National Transmission Franchises. They do not provide a level playing field., Its strictly ‘how can I make money on my idea’. Not a bad idea if you really get support that you are paying for. When there is no support you get the ‘Matco System’

OBC say its the name on the truck, no wait, its the distributor, no wait, it was because I was a good dm, no wait, you have to play by the rules, no wait, you have to not tell Matco what your doing, no wait, your dm will give you those extra shop, no wait, your RM will Take away those shops, their not yours. Wait…. You signed the contract didn’t you read it? No wait…I violate that anyway and so does matco.

Is real simple, you buy $50K in tools, $100K in a truck, and must continue to buy a minimum of $160k in tools a year. Thats it. But remember, Matco tools is in it for the money. And Danaher expects Tom Willis to increase that number by 10-15% each year. But how? One way is to burn an old distributor not playing by the rules and get that Starter Inventory out there! Boom $50K right there CASH !

Oh and take back some of the old inventory for a 15% restocking fee and give it to the new guy at full price. You know what this systems works! Way to go Matco!

Even warranty, we can tell the distributor to buy the products to do warranty, he pays his bill in 2 weeks and only send in warranty every month or two, some even wait a year. We sell thousands of dollars of equipment and we’ll get to the warranty credit after it sits on the dock a month or more. That adds up to millions of their dollars we get to use.

People better really think about the franchise model…

  • Matco2

Idea farm is correct. Just think of all the free labor the former distributors are putting in here for either Matco or Jerry. Could help either.

Do you formers want to be years into this and still here. This is not going to be a Mc Donalds drive through time frame result.

This may make you feel more in control but if you have plans of anyting other than self employment in your future this is killing you. You have put your name all over this and can be labled as a problem. When I was hiring people I never wanted a victom because you always have a victom.

Not only that you are sitting in front of a computor all day trying to tell people that you never met that you are a victom. Wow what a downer.

If I’m not correct let me know but didn’t Jerry and crew try this before and FAIL.

I’m sure we will here from tommy…..

Got to go put more money in the bank :) Good day

  • Kevin

The copy-and-paste pro (guest) is back again, though not answering any questions. So guest, you found franchises ranked higher than Matco? Gee, I’m so proud of you. So by your logic, a person should only be involved with the franchise with the highest ranking. Never get a different one. Wow, we’d have a bunch of Hampton Hoels, now wouldn’t we. I can’t afford one- maybe you can. Is that what you do? If not, I guess you made a bad choice. The problem is, you said Entrepreneur Magazine rankings meant nothing when they gave awards to Matco.
Your quote: “The Entrepreneur ranking is not only meaningless, its silly, embarrassing even”

But the rankings all of the sudden mean something when you found franchises ranked higher than Matco. You’re still a liar and a poser, but now we can add hypocrite to the list. As I said before, your words mean nothing. Never have.

  • Guest

IMHO, Former Distr sums up this racket about as concisely as I’ve seen:

“Is real simple, you buy $50K in tools, $100K in a truck, and must continue to buy a minimum of $160k in tools a year.

You know what this systems works!”

Yes, the system works. For Matco!

  • Former Distr

So, Kevin also acknowledges that the Entrepreneur Mag rankings are meaningless.

  • Todd A. Peterson

For the RECORD! I read my CONTRACT as I stated before. My DM specifically asked me if I had taken it to an Attorney. My response was “Do I NEED too.” His response was “HA! HA! HA! (Laughing) NO! Matco take’s GOOD care of their DISTRIBUTOR’S.” I specifically remember that but we also went on to laugh and I remember saying something to the effect that “If I didn’t trust Matco I wouldn’t be doing it.” Of Course that rings true for every franchisee and that is why they prey on mechanics and people who want to be their own boss. Because they don’t read as OBC said earlier the FINE print. Franchisees know that if they want to be a Distributor they have to sign a contract. That contract is Matco ordering you to jump off a cliff with a rope around your neck! Then when you don’t do it. It’s churn and burn time.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    Still not answering Questions?

  • Kevin

Former, you have such fine debating skills. Yes there are many ways to ruin a business, and many ways to succeed. If you didn’t understand that going in, you shouldn’t have been on a truck.

So does Matco limit how often you send warranty tools in? Didn’t know that. I sent in a bunch a few weeks ago- 4 boxes totalling $8700. 3 boxes got there on a Wednesday, and I had my credit for those 3 before the 4th box got there the next day. So much for your “on the dock a month or more” theory. In 22 years, I have never had to wait more than a week for warranty credit. Probably because I’m on the OBC list, and you WMD have to wait till last.

Exagerations and lies will not help your cause, but they do help mine. Thanks

  • Kevin

Former said: “So, Kevin also acknowledges that the Entrepreneur Mag rankings are meaningless.”

Is that what you got from my post? Really? Your lack of comprehension is astounding.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE! DANCE

    Will someone answer a Question?

So, if a Distributor only works 3 days a week and has less than $18,000 in Matco inventory. Will Matco let him sell his Franchise?

  • Guest

Todd A. Peterson wrote: “I wonder if adding all these Churned Destributors propells Matco into that #1 Ranking. That would be believable. Maybe we can send them a letter asking how they derive the conclusion of who is and is not #1. You know WHAT FACTORS they judge on!”

Todd: Entrepreneur’s supposed criteria is posted here
    http://www.entrepreneur.com/franchises/franchise500/about.html

Note: “We do not measure subjective elements such as franchisee satisfaction or management style”

Also note: “Remember that the Franchise 500® is not intended to endorse, advertise or recommend any particular franchise.”

So, Matco’s big claim to fame, that they Entrepreneur recommends them as the #1 tool franchise is, (surprise, surprise) completely false.

  • Tommy Cheung

Apple cider vinegar, dosen’t know me, and you so called dedicated matco guys don’t watch anyones back, you all are a bunch of backstabbers, you don’t watch out for your fellow distributors, I have seen how you all act.

Go to expo, be friendly, leave and stab your coworkers right in the back, karma is a bitch.

Your time with matco is limited, the numbers show, so call Jerry and get ready for the ride.

  • Sounds like he has no franchise left to sell.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    WOW! Right there it is!

    I copied and pasted it!

“growth rate and size of the systems”

Matco hasn’t seen a growth rate increase in awhile.

Unless you count New Distributors separately!

  • Kevin

Former said: “I was in a MDAC meeting with Kevin when, they all admitted they buy outside”

That’s right, Former. I remember that meeting well. Matco posed the question to find a way to get that business back, and asked what had to be done for us to buy those products from them, instead of other vendors. We made a list of items that we needed better pricing on, and they responded with better pricing. That benefitted the current franchisees greatly, since they could now get decent pricing without violating their contract. The pricing may not have been as good as the outside vendors, but if you figure in your VPTT, it was close. I thought it was a step in the right direction, but the WMD will always find the dark side of any issue.

  • Tommy Cheung

everything apple cider does is behind someones back, like normal, cant face a man, uses a bogus name, and talks behind his fellow distributors.

MATCO TEACHES D.M.s TO DO THINGS BEHIND A DISTRIBUTORS BACK, YOU JUST ADMITTED IT, THEY ARE NOT HONEST OR MAN ENOUGH TO FACE SOMEONE,

MATCO’S MOTTO- DONT ANSWER QUESTIONS, RUN AND HIDE AND LOOK THE OTHER WAY.

  • Todd A. Peterson

What do you mean Jay? He has A truck with inventory Doesn’t he?

  • Kevin

Tommy said: “Your time with matco is limited, the numbers show”

What numbers are those, Tommy? 16% separation rate per year? That means 84% retention rate. I think I’ll be fine. but thanks for your concern.

  • Former Distr

Kevin, didn’t say Matco tells you when to send warranty in, They know most don’t do it every week. Of course you got your credit quick, they don’t need that credit going in after the first of the year, messes up the numbers for january.

I have waited two or more weeks, having to call, then waiting another week.

Matco has a priority at Nashville, SHIp OUT Fast, we can bill then. Warranty claims when you have time. But make sure its done by the end of business in December.

I’m sure you hear from your DM every year at this time get your warranties in!

I thought you said a month or more. So which is it?

Former said: “I’m sure you hear from your DM every year at this time get your warranties in!”

    You’re sure? 22 years, 4 DM’s. hasn’t happened yet, but you’re “sure”.

    Another exageration, another lie.

  • Kevin

Tommy said: “EVERYONE IS AGAINST MATCO.”

If the handfull on here is “everybody”, I guess you’re right.

    Another exageration, another lie.

  • Matco2

Former I’m glad that Nashville priority is to ship SOLD tools. I will take that over a credit. Besides they are not the same department. Two seperate areas.

  • MATCO#1

Todd, to sell something there must be value, I have 18,000 inventory in sockets?? So what are you trying to sell?

  • Guest

MATCO#1 writes “Guest, the answer to your gibberish regarding hampton hotels and mcdonalds u am guessing comes down to money. Most people that come into business with Matco don’t have a million in the bank to drop on a mcdonalds.”

    MATCO#1 is, as usual, wrong.

Supercuts, Vanguard Cleaning Systems, Subway, Jan-Pro, Kumon Math & Reading Centers, Jazzercise, and Anytime Fitness don’t require $1M in the bank. In fact, several have lower investments than Matco.

Funny, MATCO#1 and the OBC brag up the #1 ranking for Matco (even using it for his screenname), but when its pointed out that many are rated higher, the rankings are gibberish.

Which is it, boys? Do you still want to brag about the Entrepreneur ranking if doing so means Jazzercize and Janitorial franchises under $10K are a better investment?

    Can’t have it both ways.

  • MATCO#1

Tommy no response to “idea farm” wasn’t that hard to figure out was it?

Tommy I am a franchise I am not against charter, I am convinced Tommy even if you were a charter you still would have found a reason to fail… Aren’t you the guy that just wanted to buy tools at a meeting and leave. Successful dbr’s hang around after the meeting and talk about success stories.

Todd how do you sell working 3 days a week? It’s not an object to sell….unless you can sell lazy….or retired.

  • Former Distr

I’m sorry Kevin , et al. I got caught up in the moment, how dare I debate Matco’s finest.

Any way you look at it, matco has millions of your money working for them. What do you have? You bought the tools, paid for them and sell them on TP.

I know what Matco has for terms with their vendors and I know your terms. You could have it better, but I think your afraid of having to do a little more work for a little more money.

No need to respond kevin, I understand the security that you feel you have with Matco on your truck.

  • Todd A. Peterson

    OBC COMMANDER, Matco#1, Jay

So, if a Distributor only works 3 days a week and has less than $18,000 in Matco inventory. Will Matco let him sell his Franchise?

  • Todd A. Peterson

What if my DM told me before he hired me I could run as many days I want?
