We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity. According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :
“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.
“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.
“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.
“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”
Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

Guest…why would anyone want to continue doing anything if they were a below avg distributor. If you were a below avg baseball player you would get sent to the minor league.
MATCO#1 wrote “If you were a below avg baseball player you would get sent to the minor league.”
Your analogies are as meaningful as they are accurate.
So you are saying that Matco franchisees, like baseball players, are employees? Last time I checked, baseball players weren’t required to invest $$$ in the franchise.
But there is a similarity… baseball players walk away with nothing, just like Matco franchisees.
Question: If you were a below average DM, would you get sent back to being a distributor?
Matco#1
So when you were a DM and a Distributor asked to call on a shop with no service.
What did you tell them?
More importantly what were your actions what did you DO?
We have all failed. We failed beacause we signed on with matco, listened to the d.m’s and r.m ‘s, over bought per matco, sold to techs with no socials or couldn’t pay, we did promotions, gave tools away, had them help us give tools away on our initial startup, put money on the street as we were told by matco to do by matco and watch for nothing in return , but a kick to the curb.
We failed because we listened to matco , they ran our business into the ground and then looked the other way as usual. This is a standard business practice that matco does, sign them up, put tools on the street, and kick the distributor out.
There are others, who will fail, because, they will listen to matco, they are new in the business, and they haven’t learned how matco treats their distributors. There are others who talk a big game now , but will be walking soon, because you are only an employee and can be replaced and will be.
WE HAVE FAILED ( BECAUSE OF MATCO) AND OTHERS WILL FAIL, (BECAUSE OF MATCO) MATCO HAS ONE GOAL AND THAT IS FOR EVERYONE TO FAIL AND TURN THE FRANCHISES EVERY TWO TO THREE YEARS, CHECK THE RETURNS ON INVESTMENT.
Where is MATCO#1’s immediate, snappy and nonsensical comeback?
I hope it wasn’t that “below average DM” crack that silenced him.
Seriously, MATCO#1, not being able to hack being a DM is something most of us would say is something to be PROUD of.
Matco#1 remember this?
Last night we got to hang out with Matco Tools regional manager Allen Plunk and district managers Kent Holladay and Jason Neil, along with a few Matco distributors Mike and Ed. I rode on Ed’s tool truck last February before the Phoenix race. Mike is a new distributor; he’s only been in the business for three months and he’s on a roll selling it up. Times are rough and tough and he’s making a good living as a Matco Tools distributor. If he can do it, you can do it too. It’s a great way to be your own boss and you can start by calling 888-MY-MATCO if you’re looking for a career change or a new job. We ate dinner at Rustler’s Rooster and it was great to hang out with my Phoenix Matco family for a few hours last night.
Great way to be Matco’s little puppet. How’s Mike and Ed doing these days?
Guest you can try and attack me and insult me, but dealt with a lot of people in my life time and I know when one is a waste of my time, and you would be one of them a waste of my time!
Todd already answered your question all you have to do is read
Just ONE MORE from the barrage of emails I’ve received:
Leo- I was a Matco distributor for seven years in New Mexico, My D. M. didn’t even call once to see where I was having trouble, to see if he could help with anything to try and turn my business. I never got 1 phone call except to pickup a toolbox I had. So he could give to his new distributor. He never did a yearly review or ride around with me in seven years, but thats ok. Getting out of Matco was the best thing I could have done .
………………EVERY day more emails, EVERY day more stories
HOW MANY WILL IT TAKE FOR MATCO TO ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM?????
Because, there IS a problem!
They are doing awesome Todd Ed is in top 100, so is mike, mike even started a second truck last year, he is on mdac. Ed and I go to Vegas race and pamona race all the time. See Ed started about 3 months before my move, didn’t have a dm, but when I came down he listened and did promotions and attended the sales meetings, and has been a top distributor every year, in fact I am going to call him pretty quick to say hi…in fact the year I moved down here was the year I finished #2 as a dm “that one was for guest”!
Yep, one thing I miss about being a dm helping a dbr that would listen, unfortunately a lot don’t then wonder why they failed.
Also miss working for Allen, awesome person and RM, you would like him Todd, good ol southern boy from Memphis. Absolutely the best boss I have ever had! Would have quit being a dm long before if he wasn’t my boss
How about this one? Matco#1
Lucky Dog hats in the winner’s circle, and two of my Matco distributor buddies, Jim Ledbetter (orange shirt) and Jason Neil (black shirt), after we won the race. Jason, being the loyal Matco Tools distributor that he is, bet on us to win the race. Since he was able to cash in, he’s buying dinner next time.
See, don’t you guys want to be like Matco#1. Go to races and live the good life with Antron Brown. I mean I undrstand that if Matco were to have to take responsibility for the things their RM’s AND DM’s do to Distributors that this might HURT your ability to go to NHRA Races and live it up with Matco NHRA racers but to stretch truths and defend Matco to the point you destroy your own credibility? Come ON!
Yep Debbie we all receive emails, I choose not to put peoples story in public but I know that’s not your style, what happen to the you tube videos? Can’t find them?
“I was a Matco distributor for seven years in New Mexico, My D. M. didn’t even call once to see where I was having trouble, to see if he could help with anything…”
MATCO#1 immediately implies that he failed because he didn’t listen to his DM. Then he’s off to his fantasy winner’s circle to pretend he is somebody.
It’s called DENIAL.
“HOW MANY WILL IT TAKE FOR MATCO TO ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM?????”
It’s all about ego and money. Unfortunately, it will take some big hits in the Matco/Danaher pocketbook for things to change.
With the likes of MATCO#1, Kevin etc. refusing to support their fellow dbrs and fighting against change, change from within will probably never happen.
That’s where attorneys come in, unfortunately. Tell Antron his sponsorship might be getting cut back for the settlements that are surely coming. He might have to fill up his own tank pretty soon.
I’ll say it again Matco#1! I am sure you are an exception to the rule when it comes to DM’s. I think Mr. Plunk is probably a great RM but the more you stretch truths about Matco with me regarding initial head count and procedures involving Drop/Add forms the less credible you become. If you are going to post on here at least be HONEST.
I believe you are a GREAT Distributor but don’t expect me or others to believe you took a route (with Your DM and previous Distributor experience) of anything near a minimal head count. I am sure other Distributors would argue that you are sitting on a OBC route just like Bud Cook.
So Mike has another truck now too? You know I am not jealous but do you see where that is a problem with new Franchisees? Matco doesn’t sell you the idea of having two franchises to make it as a Franchisee. Yet these guys are inflating the purchase average making it impossible for new franchisees to succeed. That is why Matco has over 465 routes available today and has that churn and burn stigma.
Yeah funny thing Todd, I was a dbr with that pic with Jim, Matco didn’t pay for anything….When you run a successful business you can travel to races and places like Disneyland with the kids….and here is the kicker never turned in the ticket to NY, NY, saved it.
Its nice you are looking up my pics everywhere, I am not your type though and I am happily married.
So your going to attack the relationship I have with my wife of over 13 YEARS. Or the two kids who can’t go to Disney world becuse Matco took away his DREAM.Just so other people can see why you attack us with great persistance here is another peice of click and paste:
That night, we all showed up at F1 Race Factory for some go-karting action with our Matco family from Phoenix like Allen Plunk, Jason Neil and Kent Holladay and a bunch of distributors like my boy Ed Sopher. Ed was rockin’ his Matco crew shirt all weekend at the race track.
Todd/Debbie:
No point beating your heads against the wall trying to get OBC members like MATCO#0 to acknowledge the painfully obvious.
As long as he and his OBC buddies get preferential treatment and are able to go to races and Disneyland, they will not take off their rose-colored Oakleys or have an ounce of compassion for what you are going through.
There are changes coming, though, and if they lose their protected status or get a taste of what Todd went through, guess who will be screaming the loudest?
FYI, coming up on 3000 comments for this thread.

Not even MATCO#0 has anything positive to post there. Not fun unless he’s kicking someone who’s down.
Amen Guest!
Hey Todd you are the one obsessing over me. I am just stating facts, Matco never paid for any drag race I attended, attended 6 last year. 6 the year before couldn’t do that as a dm.
Your the one going on the Internet looking for pics of me, I am just telling you I ain’t that kind of a guy.
Guest you and I both know the defender sight was designed to get everyone off this potty party.
Here is another click and paste in which Matco#1 will do anything to defend Matco anywhere regardless of known situation.
Justin HooverMatco Tools
I filled out the entire form to open a franchise with the promise of a free 88 tooth ratchet. That was a load of crap. Since then I have found other sources for tools. I have lost a lot of confidence in Matco.

David Blankenship I don’t understand your complaint. Not everyone gets approved for a franchise. Matco gave you a free tool just for trying. What is so bad about that? The last I checked, nobody else did anything like that.
September 7, 2011 at 3:56pm ·
LikeUnlike.Justin Hoover That’s the problem, I never got the ratchet. The whole thing is off putting. Why tell me that your going to do something as simple as give me a ratchet and not follow through. What am I to come to expect once I agree to open a franchise. If I tell someone I’m going to do something I follow through. It’s called trust and being trustworthy
September 7, 2011 at 4:52pm ·
LikeUnlike.Justin Hoover At this point they can keep the ratchet. I’ll chalk it up as a lesson learned. I bought a ratchet from Snap-On, not because I needed it, just because. I like it, its my new go to ratchet. Something good did come of this. My Snap-On guy is cooler than I thought.

LikeUnlike.David Blankenship Justin, you need to contact the DBR that you have been working with & see what’s the holdup. I do know that you need to complete all the process to get the ratchet. There are some people that filled out the application & that was it. They never returned phone calls or e-mails so they dont qualify. I don’t know your situation so I’m guessing.
September 8, 2011 at 11:18am ·
LikeUnlike.Justin Hoover David, thank you for your concern. Really thank you, but at this point its water under the bridge. What’s done is done. I’ve found a new tool source. Everything is good.

So tell us how you turned Justin Hoover into a MATCO guy!!! Looks to me like you just GAVE UP!!!
Todd seriously looks like you are obsessed with me, I told you I am married
Todd:
That IS funny.
Just like here, MATCO#0 will dispute anything that challenges the Matco status quo and then, when it’s too obvious or absurd to deny, he either changes the subject or pretends it wasn’t said.
Is it possible that some robotic division of Danaher is creating androids and replacing the distributors on the Old Boys Club (soon to be the ORC)?
Guest, maybe if Debbie, Tommy, Todd and you all repost all of your reports that you have done already you will put it over the 3000 mark.
Guest you have nothing to dispute! Just because Todd can’t make it on a route with 325 doesn’t mean, me, and others can’t.
“Guest, maybe if Debbie, Tommy, Todd and you all repost all of your reports that you have done already you will put it over the 3000 mark.”
Not necessary. The Old Farts Club will come on around midnight with their budweiser-infused wisdom to pat each other on the back a few dozen times and drive the comment count up.
MATCO#0, it’s good you aren’t counting on those DM bonuses for signing up new dbrs, since I think 2012 is gonna be a tough years for Matco franchise sales. Thousands of comments on the complaint thread, virtually none on the defender’s thread, youtube videos, well-publicized Matco lawsuits, etc. etc.
Kickbacks and bonuses will be tougher to come by this year for the OBC DMs.
And now that you admit that you don’t even get comped race tickets… jeez. If I were selling Snap-on, Mac or Cornwell franchises, I’d print the address of this 3000 comment thread on my business card and paste it into every email.
What’ll you change your name to next year when Entrepreneur makes Snap-on #1 after they read all these complaints? MATCO#2of2?
Matco#1
No I will get their just doing what I do best. Investigating, speaking the truth and letting people who attack and condemn others be destroyed by their own accounts.
I believe Stow, OH will get a kick out of this comment I found!!!
Cory KnoxMatco Tools
bought an mdtech plus. started reading strange, she sent it away, they sent it back and said it was a new one, but serial number is the same. Love matco tools but not picky on the customer service.

Matco#1 advice for Cory Knox is to buy a fluke! Who OWNS Fluke? SNAP-ON
I can honestly say in my 6 1/2 years as Matco Distributor I may have sold one Fluke meter because I refused to stock my competitors tools.
However I did stock test leads, Digital read out conversion kit upgrades, batteries and fuses and test lead ends that were purchased from FLUKE. So I could reach Snap-On customers by servicing their tools and at a cheaper price than Snap-On.
I definitely didn’t send them to my competitor or stock my competitions tools when Matco made a good meter at a cheaper price.
Todd, hate to break the bad news to you DANAHER owns fluke, shoot you lie about something like that. Man you are getting desperate.
If I am reading this thread correctly…..Matco #1 is a DM?
If so this is why Matco is in this position…..Enough said.
Sure glad he was not my DM or I would not have made it over 8 years…..
Also if he is truly a DM he should be on the route helping his guys instead of being on here 24/7.
Former, you can’t read either, used to be a dm
24/7 don’t think so , hadn’t been on in 4 days until last night, but when Tommy Debbie and guest who was never even a dbr start lying felt obligated to point it out.
Matco 1 since you used to be a DM…Just what are you doing now?
Are you now with corporate?
And yes Debbie & Tom are and were Ditributors.
If your not with Matco I’m not sure why your defending stupid practices and making embarassng comments…..Just asking……
For some reason I thought DM’s were smarter than that…..sorry.
Todd is at it again lol! Another “fact” by todd “Who OWNS Fluke? SNAP-ON”
You crack me up, no wonder you couldnt make it. Hopefully in your new career you study your products a little more! lol
Yeah former no stupid comments I could make up a lie about working in corporate, I was tired of being a dm, so I took over a route that was doing 2,000 a week, in 10 months finished #7 last year, so been a little busy working, but sometimes I am bored so I come on here. I know debbie is a dbr, not sure why she hates it so much, I don’t know who Tom is?
Well Todd, since Fluke was bought by Danaher Crp in June of 1998 I can see why you did not realize that. You really should do more research about your “facts” before you post them. You should realy only post things you KNOW are true.
And quit being a Stalker of people…..
Directly from the 2010 Franchise Business Review (2011 not yet published)
less than 30 hours/week 0.0%
30 – 40 hours/week 4.5%
40 – 50 hours/week 22.3%
50 – 60 hours/week 36.7%
60+ hours/week 36.5
A MERE 4.5 % of distributors are working 40 or less hours a week.
A WHOPPING 95.5 % ARE WORKING over 40, 50, 60, AND MORE HOURS PER WEEK
Then how? can it possibly be that only the LAZY fail???
According to THIS survey 95.5% of distributors are busting their asses.
Yep guest17, when I would go interview people one of the things I gave them was a list of companies danaher owned, you probably got it too, you probably read it too. See it appears Todd wanted to come into business very bad, so it sounds like he just signed things and didn’t read. Because if he had read the docs he would have seen that you can only call on your list of calls, he would have seen that danaher owns fluke and many other companies.
So Debbie knowing that why do you only work 4 days a week and 40 hours?
Former WI Distributor:
Brace yourself. Here comes the OBC (Old Boy’s Club). They come out at night, like night weasels.
They refuse to acknowledge any problem, no matter how obvious, any impropriety, or any need for improvement by Matco.
You tell your story about being forced out after 8 years? No comment from the OBC.
A 7 year distributor fails without a single call or finger lifted to help by his DM? No comment from the OBC.
As Tommy says, ignore ignore ignore.
Todd makes a minor error of no significance (what does it matter who owns fluke?), and they are all over him like a pack of hyenas.
You were right when you said that with these guys as DMs and MDAC members, it’s no wonder there are big problems at Matco Tools.
Let the lawsuits commence!
Yep guest ” minor mistake by Todd” yeah fluke only has thousands of sku’s, I think I only sold a dozen or so $500 meters from them last year, not to mention test leads and other items, but hey if Todd didn’t want to sell fluke it was his choice.
At least he was a dbr unlike you
Your a waste guest, waste, waste, waste, you have no value here, you can’t sympathize for Tommy or Debbie because you were never a dbr and you can’t argue facts with us because you have no knowledge of the business, just a waste!
MATCO#0 writes “you can’t sympathize for Tommy or Debbie…”
Obviously, you have sympathy for no one.
No I do, just not you.
Guests recording says are offices are now closed, please limit your comments to business hours.
Tommy you say hi to some of my friends in Wa. How about Oregon Idaho Montana Wyoming, shoot Utah Nevada Cali, Alaska, I know a ton of guys make sure you tell them I said hi, it would be very rude to call people and not say hi for me. Come to think of it there’s s few in Texas too.
That’s true Jay I forgot, maybe I can get that phone list from Tommy don’t you miss talking to guys sometimes, that’s it, I am calling peoPle tonight just to say hi.
So was guests son a failed dbr?
Matco#1, I received that list too. It’s always good to remind the competition that they are supporting the good guys when they sell those brands.
Remember this Tommy, guest and the rest of Jerry’s kids. When you fuel up your car and you see that Gilbarco logo on the pump.. You’re supporting the good guys!! Thanks!
