We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity.  According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :

“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.

“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.

“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.

“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”

Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

    I also wonder

WHY hasn’t anybody explained WHY Matco feels is is appropriate to MAKE money off our military veterans and give them NOTHING in return??

    1) Profits from Veterans who sign up through the Vetfran Program. $2400 any Vet who enters the Vetfran Program, $5600 any Vet who enters the Vetfran Program and has not been employed for more than 6 months or $9600 for any Vet who enters the Vetfran Program and is DISABLED.

    THIS IS COMPLETELY SHAMEFUL

AND YET, MATCO FEELS NO REMORSE WHEN THEY CHURN VETERANS

********CHURN AND BURN******* Matco equal opportunity ……… yep, they will take ANYONE’S money and help them fail…………..

Why is everyone up in arms about the Forbes article and Snap-On?

We have been complaining about the FALSE #1 Entrepreneur ranking Matco has and noone will listen.

Oh I know why! Jim Lager is a TOP tool Distributor for Snap-On tools who has the ability to stand up to the CORPORATE bullies. They can’t call him a failure.

I talked to Jim in GREAT depth last night who also told me HE is a Veteran.

He explained to me that Matco, Snap-On, Mac and Cornwell LOVE military personell who sign up for their Franchises. Soldiers have HONOR, DETERMINATION, ABILITY and most of all KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW ORDERS!

These tool companies love that aspect about us and it is so true. A REAL business owner in July of 2006 would have told the Corporation Matco Tools to PISS OFF!!! which is what I did till Matco threatened my Franchise. I should have gone ahead and gotten an Attorney though and allow them NOT to profit off of MY hard work and DEDICATION to my job and BUSINESS.

Do I feel like a chump on the playground? Yes I do!

My kids are taught in school that being a bully is wrong! I think we need to ALLOW bullies in schools so we can prepare them for ADULTHOOD!

You know! Let them know what to expect when they get older and do something like START A FRANCHISE!!!!!

I have not heard one thing about the vegas trip by all you, is it just another failure by the few,the proud the quiters, hey vegas was great, we missed you,NOT..

  • This is a quote from Tim Gilmore from Las Vegas………

“Recognizing the fact that service is the key element in being a successful distributor, Gilmore said the service his distributors provide in the field is really a function of the service we provide to them. We have good service, but it can always be better, so one of the initiatives I’ll take on is improving our service to them.”

He also talked about recruiting new distributors, something Gilmore has been involved in most of his career at Matco.”

Wow ! Improving service to DBR’s ?? What a novel idea ! Maybe a little to late for thousands of distributors discarded as yesterdays trash. Recruiting seems to be a priority as well. Good luck with that.

Gilmore is just another corporate cockroach however he will bring a new motto to the biz, instead of “churn and burn” he is changing it to “F$ck em and Forget em” or “If they are dumb enough to go to war for us then they are dumb enough to work for us” or “You’re gonna owe your soul to the company STOW” or “Failure is not an option, we will terminate you long before you fail” or_____________

    Hey Mr. Gilmore,

Why don’t you mention the thousands of lives Matco has ruined by churning & burning the distributors ? What about all the Veterans who served their country and came home to try Matco only to be “terminated” for some made up reason ?

Why don’t you mention the recruiting video Matco edited on YouTube was full of false lies and promises ?

    EXCERPTS FROM
Matco Tools Introduces New President At Tool Expo

Recognizing the fact that service is the key element in being a successful distributor, Gilmore said the service his distributors provide in the field “is really a function of the service we provide to them. We have good service, but it can always be better, so one of the initiatives I’ll take on is improving our service to them.”
WHAT SERVICE IS HE TALKING ABOUT??????? GOOD SERVICE??????? I NEVER SAW IT!!!!!!!!!!

Gilmore stressed the importance of relationships and spoke of plans to build on the strength of internal relationships. “We always say that Matco is more of a family, and that really shows through at events like this. They know we don’t just look at them as a number … It’s a relationship business. Every distributor is the Matco brand, and their customers’ perspective of them is based on the relationship they’ve formed.”
IMPORTANCE OF RELATIONSHIPS, LIKE A FAMILY??????????? HELL OF A FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY REAL FAMILY NEVER TREATED ME SO BADLY!!!
Gilmore is obviously pleased to be back at Matco Tools, and there’s no doubt he feels his connection to the distributors. “I was only gone for two years, but I’ve met many people who were joining their first training class just before I left. Seeing what they’ve accomplished in only two years

WELL IN TWO YEARS I KNOW WHAT DISTRIBUTORS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED = THEY ACCOMPLISHED BUSINESS FAILURE, BANKRUPTCY, DIVORCE…..

MATCO HAS BEEN BLOWING SMOKE FOR SOME TIME NOW……… although we all KNEW that!

Gilmore said that Matco finished 2009 by taking market share through growth in the U.S. and Canada, while distributor retention was the company’s “highest in history.” Willis followed with news of seven straight months continued improvement, assessing that “recovery is under way.”

DISTRIBUTOR RETENTION WAS THE HIGHEST IN HISTORY?!?!?!? WHAT? SO IS HE SAYING THEY HAVE BEEN WORSE THAN 49% ?????
REMEMBER, ACCORDING TO MACTO’S OWN FRANCHISE DOCS – 49% FAILURE

“Everyone was very upbeat and the general feeling was that things have not only stabilized, but are improving,” he said.

SO TODD, TOMMY, RICHARD ——— FEELING ‘UPBEAT’ ??? THINK BEING UNEMPLOYED NOW IS “IMPROVING”?????

Or are your articles just ‘advertisements’ for them??

Real journalism would show both sides, I think the story REALLY NEEDS TO BE TOLD

Matco tools has been accused of CHURNING distributors, there is a LAWSUIT alleging SBA LOAN FRAUD, the VET FRAN program simply abuses our servicemen…………

Please we need an article showing BOTH side of this story, the SCAM needs to be exposed

BACK IN JANUARY I POINTED OUT THAT MATCO WAS GETTING TAX CREDITS FOR LURING IN VETERANS

well well well, now that Todd has detailed out that information even further maybe NOW Matco will start to listen – IT IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!

It is NOT a good idea to mistreat American servicemen – they deserve BETTER!!

Before anyone gets all warm and fuzzy thinking Matco is so magnanimous –

Obama: Veterans Need a Jobs Break
President Barack Obama today challenged businesses to hire 100,000 unemployed veterans and military spouses over the next two years, and proposed some tax breaks to help make that happen.
“You fought for us; now we’re fighting for you,” the president told military personnel and veterans assembled today at the Washington Navy Yard.
Employers should want veterans on their teams, because they’re “smart, tech-savvy, wired to serve and are great leaders,” said Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
But to give employers additional encouragement, Obama proposed the Returning Heroes Tax Credit, which would provide a tax break worth up to $4,800 for businesses that hire an unemployed veteran. The president also proposed doubling the size of the existing tax credit for employers who hire veterans with service-connected disabilities. He also pledged to streamline the certification process for claiming these tax credits.

The $5000 incentive Matco “gives” Vets is $5000 Retail price in tools, costing Matco a FRACTION of that!
Matco is given by the government $4800 in tax credits.

  • gilmore talks of things getting better in 2009. what a bunch of hog wash. if any of you were in in 2008 you can remember the thanksgiving and christmas parties given by the rms and at stow hq. in 2009 all that went away and has yet to return.
as for the truth of all there is even churning and burning at stow with the customer service personnel. ask how many have been there over 5 years and you wont get many answers. alot of the people that were there 4 years ago are gone. why is that? another question that no one will answer.
it is all about the dollar.

i like when they changed the monthly flier size. i asked when they were going to come out with the holders for them, was told real soon. to this date there is none.
some of it is just stupid stuff but it all adds up.
its all a part of customer service. no matter how you look at it.
more lies , more bullshit. thats the way they roll.

My name is Todd A. Peterson. I am a Veteran of the U.S. Army who served 3 years from 1988 to 1991. In July of 2004 I became a Franchise Owner and Distributor of Matco Tools. My question is who is accountable when Franchisers lie, commit fraud and falsify documents to get a Veteran Franchisee TERMINATED from his Franchise Agreement? This company Matco Tools, which is OWNED by Danaher, seems to get away with treating their Distributors (Including those who sign up through the Vetfran Program) however they choose.

What is even more shameful? Matco (Danaher) is profiting from Veterans who sign up through the Vetfran Program. Through the “Heroes for Hire Act (VOW)” Matco receives $2400 for every Veteran they sign up through the Vetfran Program while only doling out $5000 in list “HARD LINE” product. This product probably didn’t even cost Matco $2400. For a Veteran who has not been employed for 6 months Matco gets $5600. For a Disabled Veteran Matco gets $9600.

As if that is not bad enough where is the proof that Veterans who end up buying into a Matco Franchise ever attain ANY kind of Financial Success.

The IFA and Vetfran were founded on the Principal and FUNDED by our government to REGULATE and PROVIDE viable and honorable opportunities in the Franchise world for VETERANS and I can assure you that Matco committed EVERY act of FRAUD you can think of upon my Franchise and DISHONOR of these GOVERNMENT FUNDED NON-PROFIT Organizations.

I would SINCERELY appreciate ANY help in rectifying the wrong I have experienced in Franchising as well as 5 others I can name at this time who are willing to be interviewed or to give statements. They all entered through the Vetfran Organization into a Matco Franchise!

    http://www.vehicleservicepros.com/article/10612000/thriving-in-a-tough-economy

A one sided article from an obviously ‘successful’ distributor………………. wonder why they won’t print a story from any one of the HUNDREDS of terminated distributors??

The day we rode with Matco distributor George Terebey, the first stop was a few miles outside his territory. “I inherited that stop, but that’s OK, you inherit stops here and there as you go along. My last stop today isn’t in my territory either, but I asked the distributor there for that one because he wasn’t stopping there and one of my regular customers moved there. The distributor didn’t mind, and I’ve made numerous toolbox sales. It’s turned out to be a very profitable stop.”

YEAH RIGHT! THE DISTRIBUTOR DIDN’T MIND??? SO WHAT? DON’T YOU NEED APPROVAL??? WHEN ONE OF MY CUSTOMERS MOVED TO A DIFFERENT SHOP, THE DISTRIBUTOR THAT WAS ASSIGNED THAT SHOP-DIDN’T STOP THERE, BUT, I WAS TOLD “IT IS OUTSIDE YOUR TERRITORY, YOU CAN’T GO THERE” CUSTOMER WAS LEFT WITH NO SERVICE!
George has also picked up new customers by following existing customers to a new stop. After following a customer to a big truck garage, George ended up with most of the other techs’ business too.
YEAH MY CUSTOMER CALLED AND ASKED MATCO FOR ME TO COME TO HIS SHOP, BUT THE ANSWER WAS NO

George said customers have told him “If it’s marked ‘China,’ I don’t want to do business with you.” He stocks the truck almost exclusively with Matco tools
SO WHAT! MOST OF MATCO TOOLS ARE MADE IN CHINA AND TAIWAN ANYWAY!!!!!! DISTRIBUTORS ARE TOLD TO TAKE OFF THE CHINA STICKERS
MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE TOOLS OUT OF THE BOX MARKED ‘CHINA’ WHAT A CROCK!!

Obviously you can sell the Matco tools for more money, but it’s also more margin.”
BULLSHIT, I COULD MAKE MORE MARGIN BUYING FROM AMAZON AND RESELLING ON MY MATCO TRUCK!

THESE ARE THE EXACT COMMENTS I MADE TO THIS ARTICLE ON THIS SITE TOO!

  • Debbie Solko

It appears Matco is doing ALL IT CAN to “talk up their business” and apparently they have paid the right people to get their LIES in print

    http://www.vehicleservicepros.com/article/10329086/keep-your-truck-stocked

Mark Menozi is in his ninth year as a Matco Tools distributor based in Morris, Ill.

**Probably because HE IS under the old contract and am not subject to the insane rules and restrictions that the newer franchises are bound by. As most franchises MATCO is really getting out of hand selling routes (franchises) that are not viable. **

Mark interacts with about 400 customers a week,
**Isn’t that special, bet Richard would have LOVED to have had 400 customers!**

and has had gross sales near $700,000 for the past few years.
**Oh but Matco NEVER made any income promises, did they?**********

‘You just have to order the tools and sell them, that’s all you’ve got to do …. “I’m a very low-pressure salesperson. I don’t want guys in the shop to see me as a salesperson,
**********REALLY, TIM NOVAK WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT!******** OH YEAH, THAT ALL YOU’VE GOT TO DO, SIMPLE……….

In fact, the whole business is about concentrating on the positives. Mark said he’s heard some distributors complain they’ve gotten a bad route, for instance.

“There’s no such thing as a ‘good route.’ The right person can sell tools anywhere; the route is what you make it

***********THAT IS THE BIGGEST LIE MATCO IS HAVING HIM TELL!!!!********************

  • Debbie Solko

    http://www.vehicleservicepros.com/article/10338556/just-getting-started

Another advantage, a big one, is the fact that Eric lives in his territory. He drives about 300 miles a week, but it’s all local, which saves time. The main benefit of living in your territory is knowledge and familiarity of the local economy and the people working there.

*********and then there are other distributors that get routes that are 500,600, or 700 miles a week, sure that sounds fair************

  • Todd A. Peterson

Does George know that Matco can take his shops anytime they choose if the shops are not secured on his route list in writing by Matco and the Distributor. Or am I just the CHUMP who had a RM come to my house and threaten me with my Franchise if I didn’t surrender shops not once but twice. All the while I would soon find out that the new route I was signing didn’t even have a VIABLE 325 customers in it due to lies from the DM Matco sent to my house in the placement of the one they fired who started me in my Franchise.

I am sure that all the Distributors will have NO PROBLEM being successful RIGHT NOW as Matco is SUFFERING from not having enough Distributors to fill their open routes due to their previous BUSINESS practices. That is apparent EVERY DAY on their OWN Facebook page (Matco Tools).

Another problem is their TOOL BOXES which is questioned about where they are being built in an 8 minute video by their own customer as well as many other customers who are buying tool boxes and finding that when they are receiving them as a BRAND NEW product that the are RUST INHIBITED! This can be found on Facebook as well.

Vetfran is a program that Matco is a part of and why? Is it because that the way they have their program set up is so that they profit through the tax credits given by our government through the Vetfran Program? Matco gives $5000 at LIST HARDLINE PRODUCT which has a profit margin of min. 40% for ANY Franchisee. Take away the profit margin that Matco has when they sell that product to the Franchisee and the cost is somewhere around what they get to sign up a Veteran through the Vetfran Program. So it is a WASH! But if the Veteran is unemployed for 6 months Matco gets $5600 and if they are a Disabled Vet they get $9600.

Matco is being sued for SBA Loan Fraud!

Matco’s own President had to recall and edit a video he made to recruit others into the Matco Franchise because he PRODUCED a FALSE SURVEY (LIED) to promote the Matco Franchise. He still lies in it and at EXPO got Distributors to lie for him this year.

Matco is doling out shops like CRAZY now because they know they have been immoral and dishonorable about how they have been treating their Distributors.

This Distributor Association for ALL TOOL FRANCHISES is a GREAT idea because the individual programs like MDAC are CONTROLLED by the FRANCHISER. Just like the IFA and Vetfran who were ORGANIZED and are still being CONTROLLED by FRANCHISERS. You need only to LOOK at who is a Vetfran Committee Chairman to see who CONTROLS it!!!

  • WORST OF THE LOC Photo Contest
Not long ago, I drove by a rundown Amish farm with a small, ramshackle shop in the back. There was a tool truck dealer calling on them, his truck parked in front of the decrepit shack (I wished I had a camera). I wondered: If this franchisee had been given pictures of the shops on his List of Calls, would he still have signed up?

If you all are interested in submitting photos of the worst locations included on any franchisees’ list of calls, let me know and I’ll host the contest. You can email photos for submission to UnhappyFranchisee[at]gmail.com. If you want me the blur the company name on the business, I can.

  • raprtorman

Ok folks…………I don’t know why you don’t see it. I don’t know why you don’t recognize it. I am not a total supporter of yours, but I do in some ways, understand and feel your problems. But I think you are missing a very important point!. Very Important as to why you failed!!!!!!!!!! Pricing!!!!!!! Matco manufactures nothing. They simply rebrand!!!!! Yet you can buy anything they offer cheaper somwhere else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can you suceed if you are buying the same things the part stores are buying and sell it for 30 to 40 per cent more?!!!! I mean can you compete against Wal Mart seeling the identical items for 30 to 40 per cent more??????? Wake up and bite onto to something with some teeth in your lawsuits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • raprtorman

Allow me to explain a couple of points I did not make obvious in my previous post. You failed for several reasons. Cheif among them was sales and collections!! Second, was not maintaining an 80 % of national average buying rate. How in the blue Hell can you maintain an 80% buyers rate when you can buy anything offered at 30 to 40 % less from somewhere else??????? Check out Quizno’s and Subway. Lawsuits are flying over the same problems!!!!!!!! How can you be held responsible for failure when you are being sold products thet you can BUY ANYWHERE cheaper???????? There is your proof for CHURNING and BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I sell you you Fords under contract, at 30% over what other dealers can sell them for, is it really your fault that you fail? O r is it mine and my sleezy business scheme?????? Geez……..I should have been a lawyer!!!!!!!!!! Contact me, I just might represent you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Todd A. Peterson

What about a 3 minute Video?

  • raprtorman

OK…..I gotta add one more thing……..terminate me……my shit is paid for…….my state is a right to work state…………I will sell tools irregardless and make more money…….so go ahead……make my day……………

  • Debbie Solko

Thank you Raptorman – There is your proof for CHURNING and BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course we have been saying just that, along with a multitude of other things……
    all along

I posted that I could buy RETAIL from Amazon for LESS THAN MY COST buying through Matco

NO WAY a distributor can succeed when the deck is stacked against him like that

THEN put in the fictitious NPA in the mix and well, you are screwed………….

Never mind route, never mind sales, never mind collections…….

Matco SCREWED you from Day One, set you up to fail

  • Debbie Solko

Letter to the Editor I sent tonight……

    http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/matco-tools-franchise-distributor-churning/

PLEASE READ the accusations against Matco Tools!

They take money – loan money/federally insured loan money from new distributors. Set them up on NON viable routes. Knowing they will fail within 2-3 years, and simply start the process over.

Matco requires franchisees to meet a National Purchase Average and does not allow outside buying -YET distributors can buy the SAME PRODUCTS from other sources, sometimes even purchase Retail – FOR LESS THAN THEIR COST FROM MATCO.

    November 29, 2011
UnhappyFranchisee.com has received a report alleging that Matco Tools, a division of Danaher Corporation (NYSE: DHR), is actively engaged in what’s known as “franchise churning.” “Churning” is a form of franchise fraud wherein a franchisor sells franchises it knows (or should know) are doomed to fail, collects payments, then resells the same franchise once the previous franchisee fails.

I think is terribly UNFAIR you keep promoting a franchise opportunity that amounts to nothing more than a scam.

    Thank you,
    Debbie Solko

It violates FTC regulations to advertise Franchise opportunities AS JOBS on job web pages. So it makes me wonder WHY?? you continue to post JOBS at Matco Tools when they are actually SELLING FRANCHISES???????

  • Debbie Solko

    hmm…….. failure – sound familiar

    you bet your ass!

Matco FAILED me and others when they FAILED to provide a legitimate LOC

Matco FAILED me when they LIED and FAILED to provide a viable route

Matco FAILED to provide honest and fair pricing and tied my hands from buying from other sources at better prices

Matco FAILED to compensate me and others for labor performed for repairs violated Fair Labor Laws

Matco FAILED to provide the promised World Class Support – instead gave lame ass “I don’t know” answers………………..

Matco FAILED my customers when toolboxes arrived damaged

Matco FAILED to honor American servicemen by cheating and defrauding them and unfairly terminating their franchisees

Matco FAILED to be honest when they cheated the American taxpayer and committed SBA Loan FRAUD

    yep, sounds familiar :)

    Raptorman,

I NEVER failed!!! I paid Matco every dime I ever owed them! I sold and PROFITED from the sale of my tool truck. When I start selling tools as an Independent I will again SUCCEED!!! My problem is Matco caused me to lose money. Matco terminated my Franchise after I was successful. Matco did nothing to ensure that this Veteran got treated EQUALLY and FAIRLY in comparison to other Franchises. Matco USED me. Then TERMINATED me without justification. The Managers that were behind my demise have done similar things to other distributors and our day is coming. We WILL be successful MATCO!!!

    Collapse
We have received several comments on our news item about the 2012 Matco Tools Expo, suggesting that we are not telling the whole Matco story. I will respond here.

The news story is a simple report of an interview we obtained at a private event held by Matco Tools. It was never intended to go beyond a simple report of that interview. A full investigative report about the company, as called for in the readers’ comments, is beyond the scope of that report and indeed beyond the mission of this publication. Our mission is to present information about tools, tool distributors and best practices being used by mobile distributors.

Several comments and complaints about the company were posted to this page by former or current tool distributors, including current Matco distributors who are actively engaged in organizing an association of tool distributors. The Association’s website includes an invitation to contribute to “a newsletter (that) will allow information without insults.” We respectfully request the same from our readers too.

We will not censor reader comments (except for foul language), but we must remind everyone that these comments are unconfirmed by the editors of Professional Distributor and may or may not be accurate. Again, as the Editor of Professional Distributor, I ask that all comments be presented “without insult.”

    Jacques Gordon

if THIS is their response, then I would ask, Please represent your ‘articles’ for what they REALLY ARE – ADVERTISEMENTS

Very interesting comments by a few failed distributors. I have been in the tool business for 25 years, as a distributor and as a District manager for more than one company. These comments do not represent my experience at all. Perhaps the problems they expereinced were as a result of their own shortcomings. It is typical of a failure to find someone else to blame it on. The tool business is a great business for the right person but is not for everyone.

36% SBA Loan failure rate is NOT “a few:
49% FAILURE rate according to Matco’s own FDD is NOT “a few”

“a few” are successful, the ones that GOT IN 25 years ago and actually have a
TERRITORY and are not BOUND by the restrictions the current franchisees are………..

Steve Chun is a PRIME example of Matco’s incompetence as a COMPANY. I have not found ALL the Steve Chun’s YET!!!! but you can bet I WILL!!!

You know Matco!!! Improper SURVEYS!!! Lying to Distributors, Buying them out when you SCREW UP!!!

  • I think VehicleServicePros.com was taken by surprise by the backlash to their interview with Tim Gilmore.

Feel free to link back here if you leave a comment.

    http://www.vehicleservicepros.com/news/10635011/matco-tools-introduces-new-president-at-tool-expo

    Here was my comment:

    Mr. Gordon:

I know this was simply meant as a feel-good interview with a new president. Respectfully, let me explain why it hit such a nerve.

Matco Tools franchisees have a very high rate of default on SBA loans: 37%. We posted a report that alleges, in a 3 year period, 49% of Matco franchisees were churned out of the system. Yet Mr. Gilmore publicly promoted a nonexistent 90% franchising success rate to entice new franchisees, many of whom then failed. When Mr. Gilmore’s deceptive claims were exposed on our site, the Matco franchise video was removed from YouTube and reposted shortly thereafter with the section deleted.

So you can see why Gilmore being named President may not be perceived as the exciting news of the show.

In the 4000+ angry comments posted on our site by Matco franchisees, there are numerous accounts of successful distributors having their accounts cut until the point they could be terminated. There were many accounts of distributors fighting for survival, not getting help from Matco, being terminated and having their inadequate List of Calls resold to a new recruits.

Imagine having been recruited, neglected and terminated and then reading “Gilmore stressed the importance of relationships and spoke of plans to build on the strength of internal relationships. ‘We always say that Matco is more of a family…'”

Some might say that Gilmore referring to franchisees as “family” is insulting. Imagine getting a termination letter from your parents stating that your performance does not exceed 80% of your siblings’ performance so, regretfully, you are being terminated from the family ;)

If you are interested in reading more about the Matco (and other tool truck) franchise controversies from the perspective of the franchisees themselves, I’d invite you to view the list of articles, posts and discussions here: http://www.unhappyfranchisee.com/mobile-tool-franchise/

Commenters are guests on your site and should respectfully abide by your guidelines and requests. If you would like to post on some of the franchise tool truck controversies and issues, please feel free to email me at unhappyfranchisee[at]gmail.com.

Hi, I need to comment on, “The news story is a simple report of an interview we obtained at a private event held by Matco “. I don’t feel that is sufficient. You appear to be “advertising” for Matco. Multiple “interviews” that are simply extolling the supposed virtues of the franchise. Equal time – and not in the form of buried comments, should be given.
Another post stated, “Very interesting comments by a few failed distributors” I must vehemently disagree! A 36% SBA Loan Failure rate is NOT “a few”, a 49% franchise failure rate according to Matco’s own Franchise disclosure documents is certainly NOT “a few”
Clearly sir, this is a volatile issue that has severely impacted many people. Multiple law suits are pending. Multiple former Matco distributors have been left bankrupt, divorced, and unemployable (because of the resulting “bad credit rating” terminated distributors now have).
In my opinion, the only way your publication can viewed as a credible resource is if you present ALL sides of a franchise. Otherwise, your “stories” are, in fact, advertising. In which case, the disclaimer should be noted.
