Because it’s a very good and plausible sales pitch delivered by an expert con-men named Dennis Mason and Joe Smith.

While there are many variations of the NYC Bagel scam ads, there are some common, central sales points that make up the narrative.

NYC Bagel & Sandwich Shop Franchise Pitch is Too Good to be True.  Literally.

Most of the NYC Bagel Scam ads make the following representations:

 

  • “NYC Bagel & Sandwich Shop is offering for a limited time only, an exceptional Fall Special 2018 program within the [CITY, STATE NAME] areas.”
  • “Monies required for the build-out, equipment, furniture & fixtures, inventory, lease & security deposits, working capital is financed for Qualified Applicants. ONLY CASH REQUIRED is $22,500 for the Initial Franchise fee.”
  • “Additionally, we are now introducing our ‘Referral Store Program’ in the State of [STATE NAME] area. Allow us to meet or refer new prospective Franchisees to your store in order to offer new prospective Franchisees a NYC Bagel & Sandwich Shop franchise and we’ll pay you a part of every Franchise Fee received and on every new franchise sold.”
  • “Franchisees shall also have right to offer other menu items of their choice in their NYC Bagel & Sandwich Shop stores.”
  • “FLAT FEE ROYALTY FEE $500.00, NO PERCENTAGES OF SALES !!! FIRST THREE (3) MONTHS.. FREE !!!”
