Relentless, Inc. is a Lancaster, PA-based corporation that advocates for franchisees, fights franchise fraud, and publishes UnhappyFranchisee.Com.
(UnhappyFranchisee.Com) NY Bagel Café and Deli advertises on Craigslist and other Internet sites that for an upfront payment of $19,500 (or sometimes $17,500) you can own turnkey bagel café business – and they will finance the rest.
NY Bagel Café franchise ads state:
“Our Franchise Fee is reduced to a onetime fee of $19,500 [sometimes $17,500].
All monies required for the build-out, equipment, furniture & fixtures, inventory, lease & security deposits, working capital is 100% financed.
‘ONLY CASH REQUIRED $19,500’. EVERYTHING NEEDED TO OPEN YOUR STORE IS 100% FINANCED OVER 10 YEARS AND OVER THE $19,500 FRANCHISE FEE.”
According to the many complaints we have received, once the franchise/licensing agreement is signed and the franchise fee is paid, NY Bagel Café franchise salesman Dennis Mason or president Joseph Smith informs the franchisee that he/she must obtain financing, and gives them a list of “Approved Lenders.”
Dennis or Joe reportedly tell the franchisees that if they provide 3 rejection letters from lenders that they will refund their $17,500 or $19,500 franchise fees.
We have heard from numerous franchisees who were refused a refund by NY Bagel Cafe, even though they demonstrated they could not get financing.
If you or someone you know paid NY Bagel Café, Joe Smith or Dennis Mason a fee, contact us at UnhappyFranchisee[at]Gmail.com as soon as possible.
We will be happy to provide a free and confidential consultation – even if they have convinced you that you are not eligible for a refund.
We will require proof that you signed an agreement and paid the franchise fee.
Note that we are not affiliated with NY Bagel Café, president Joseph Smith or franchise salesman Dennis Mason in any way.

This is a great and welcomed development and I'm stoked that the good state of Maryland has taken steps to protect their citizens. I'm waiting on NJ to follow suit these franchises are just predatory in nature.
