29% of the TCBY franchise owners who received SBA loans, some of whom may have collateralized their franchise loan with their house or other personal assets, were unable to repay those franchise loans… despite serious incentive to do so.
The TCBY Franchise has a failure rate of 29% for SBA-backed franchise loans
According to Entrepreneur magazine, TCBY declined from 536 US franchises in 2008 to 438 in 2010… a decline of 98 units, or 18% of domestic franchises in just 2 years.

I’ve always been pleased with the service and taste of the frozen yogurt from TCBY, up until recently, on the last two occasions that I’ve visited one of the NY locations, my frozen yogurt taste like cigarettes. I’m not sure exactly why but I’m very turned off by it and rethinking any future visits.
P.S. I didn’t smoke before I came here.
I am looking to franchise and I really disturbed by your analysis. What is your source of 29% default data?
TCBY seems to be growing and doing well in NC. I just don’t understand where are you getting these numbers from? TCBY has highest market share in US according to IBS World. Have you done any comparison of TCBY default , areas and comparison with similar players like Mechnie’s, yougurtland?

Toby in birkdale village, huntersville, NC has a dominant position in this small window shopping walk by foot traffic area. The owner must know that they service bland flavors with less separation of taste from one flavor to the next. They have been cutting cost like this for two years. My wife and I stopped going there last year and decided to give them another try this week as Spring has arrived. Nothing changed! In fact it is worse. We bought $12.00 in frozen water with a hint of flavor. Pathetic corporate oversight.
