We received the following franchise warning about the MATCO TOOLS franchise opportunity.  According to commenter “TOMMY CHEUNG” :

“STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS. THEY WILL SELL YOU A BILL OF GOODS,WHICH IS NO GOOD.

“RUMOR HAS IT ,MATCO MAKES MORE MONEY SIGNING NEW FRANCHISES THAN THEY DO TAKING CARE OF THEIR CURRENT ONES.

“DARYL PRITCHETT AND MIKE RAMEY WORK TOGETHER TO SIGN YOU UP AND THEN KICK YOU TO THE CURB. I AM WORKING ON A LAWSUIT AGAINST MATCO, HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A CLASS ACTION SUIT. YOU MAY CONTACT JERRY MARKS AT MARKS AND KLEIN LAW FIRM AT [redacted], IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

“I INVESTED ALOT OF MONEY IN MATCO AND AFTER 3.5 YEARS THEY SHUT ME DOWN. WHEN THE ECONOMY SLOWED IN 2008,THEY PUT ME OUT OF BUSINESS.

“I ALSO SPOKE TO A PREVIOUS EXECUTIVE, WHO CALLED ME, AND STATED THATS THE WAY MATCO DOES BUSINESS. STAY AWAY FROM MATCO TOOLS AND RUN LIKE HELL WHEN YOU SEE THEM. I REPEAT DO NOT BUY OR INVEST IN MATCO TOOLS…”

Marks & Klein is a legitimate franchise law firm that often represents franchisees in lawsuits against their franchisors, but we haven’t verified with them whether a lawsuit against Matco Tools is in the works or not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  IS MATCO TOOLS A GOOD FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY, A FAIR FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY OR A FRANCHISE SCAM?

  • Hey Tommy,

WOULDN'T IT BE VERY COOL TO HAVE 2012 POSTS ON THIS SITE
    ************Jan. 1, 2012!!!!**************

Come on people, Let's ring in 2012 proper!!

    ************** 2012 ********** posts by Jan 1 st.

  • I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN SOMETHING WAS WRONG, WHEN I FIRST STARTED AND MY D.M WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND, ANOTHER GUY HAD TO COME HELP ME,CHECK IN, LOAD, AND ARRANGE, PARTIAL SEED FOR TWO DAYS, BECAUSE HE WANTED TO GO HOME.

  • ************2012*************

totally possible, and better - LIKELY
with an average of 48 post per DAY
we will EASILY surpass the 2012 posts by the Jan 1 date - EASILY

  • Lets do it, i know we can, i have faith in us, just keep posting and pissing people off, we are doing great. i will call you later.

  • Why is no one defending matco on the other page, the count has been at 78 all day? They must not have any supporters. It will take 3 months for them to get at 100. Would someone please step up and say something nice about matco or is there nothing nice to say? Hello, is there any supporters out there?

  • After reading these post for a couple of days, I have found some very valid points on both sides. Most of the post seem to be about bashing each other that I don't care to waste my time reading I will give the facts of my situation and leave it at that.

I will try to make a long story as short as possible. I became a Matco distributor in 2007. when seeding my route with my DM I found shops that were not on my list of calls a couple were not being serviced and he stated I could service them and he would add them to my list of calls. several other ones belonged to another Distributor.
when I finally got into my route I found out several of my shops here taken away from a couple other distributors. This did not make them happy and made it difficult for me to do business with them.
I also found out that my route was made up from a distributor that matco had terminated. he had 3 routes then downsized and went back to 1 route keeping the best shops. The portion of the route I received was the portion that he found to be unprofitable and wouldn't service any more. Thats why Matco terminated him.
The DM I had was a former Snap-On Distributor and DM. I found him to be a poor business coach. There area I serviced were also part of my DM old territory with Snap-On. In fact on a ride along at one of my stops he informed me he would wait in my truck as the shop owner had threatened to kill him if he ever set foot in his shop again.

I had also found shops on my original list of calls that were no longer in business but were supposedly surveyed. how that happened is up to you to decide.

Just before the economic crunch hit my area hard. They put a new distributor in business and took shops away from me. My DM's excuse was they weren't on my list of calls. even though he was suppose to add them to it as he said he would do. He denies ever saying that to me. then tells me I had to any shops anyway.

Things went well the first year and a half then the economic down turn hit my area hard. shops laid off several went out of business. when I asked for help and more shops I was told I still had enough to be successful. When a distributor in a neighboring territory decided to close down. he gave me a list of shops that he had found that were not on his list of calls. when I went to service some of these shops my DM called me and forbid me to go to them they were not part of my route and were being used for the route for the new guy that was going to be taking over that area. Keep in mind I had to drive by all these shops at various time during the week to get to my stops from my house.

Long story short at the end of 2009 with the loss of customer base and and no help from Matco or my DM I decided cut my losses and close my business. When I contacted my DM he said that's fine you weren't working hard enough anyway and we'll have someone else that will be successful within 6 months.

A couple of weeks ago I went to breakfast with a couple of the Distributors in my district and asked them if they had filled my route. They informed me that Matco determined the route wasn't viable to sustain a distributor and split it up between the 2 distributors that bordered my territory.

Thanks to this website I will be contacting the attorney and becoming part of the class. I lost over 250,00.00 with Matco.

  • Thank you for posting Bob, I am sorry for your loss.
However, YOU stepping forward and sharing your story,
and seeking legal assistance - makes me feel good!

This all has been very difficult - I'm not here just to
cause trouble, and it certainly hasn't been my idea of fun

But, I keep posting and the information spreads! Two years ago
I researched Matco and found nothing negative

Six months ago I had NO idea SO MANY others shared
my difficulties. In fact, when I questioned my DM about other
DBRs departures - he flat out LIED!
    ALL had been terminated!!!!
My DM painted some bogus tale about them all leaving
because of everything from personal/divorce to moving to just
    "change of heart",,,,

So, again thank you for the post,

I totally respect the fact you stated your case and
want to stay out of the fray. I'm happy you found
the site and may be able to benefit from legal aid.

You can always email me personally. Contact info can
    be found at http://www.ladymatco.com

    Happy Holidays

  • Thanks Debbie I just feel relieved that I'm not the only one who has had problems with matco. A good friend of mine is still a distributor and quite successful. but over the years he has seen the changes and is not happy with what he has seen , But he is a charter and has a different set of rules to follow and his territory is geographical and not list of calls.

The real interesting thing is is that in a 6 month span 50% of the distributors in my district closed up. I know a couple left for better business opportunities, a couple weren't renewed and the rest just couldn't make it anymore.

I do find it strange that Matco seems to hiring a lot of former Snap-On people for DM's. As in the case of my district. My DM claims he left Snap-On because he made is money when Matco recruited him. But I have had Snap-on people tell me he was terminated. I probably will never know the truth and don't really care anymore. I do lame him and my regional manager more than Matco. I think allot of what is going on is done behind upper managements back . I think the regional and DM's and even the Business development managers, have found a way to make extra money through bonuses and commissions, by putting guys in business and knowing they will fail and then getting another one in. a DM gets a lot of commission on starter inventory and the recruiter gets a bonus for every one the get in.

  • A good friend of mine has been reading the posts

    The observation was made.......

    On Dec. 14 12:10 am Matco #1 / guest #3 / Kevin Bergman wrote.........

    I have 500 k in PSA.......Really

    On Dec. 16 12:08 am Matco #1 / quest 3 / Kevin Bergman wrote.....

    I only have 350 customers........Really

So lets do some math, 500k div. by 350 is $1428.57 so if everyone of Matco # 1 customers has a PSA (doubtful) they owe $1428.57. If every PSA is a four year contract (doubtful) Matco #1 is collecting $2403.85 a week just to remit to Matco. That number is most likely much higher as they are probably not all four year contracts. Can you say contracting yourself out of business?

I don't know, it is an interesting observation. Customers that have a PSA are pretty limited on what they can spend on their Truck Accounts
I would think it would be very difficult to support purchases meeting the NPA and collecting that much in PSA payments.......................
